More than 170K without power from massive winter storm

Source: The Hill

BY MYCHAEL SCHNELL

More than 170,000 people in the eastern United States did not have power on Monday morning after a massive winter storm slammed the region.

The most outages as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time were reported in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, according to PowerOutage.us.

The North Carolina mountains saw the largest amount of snow, meteorologist Marc Chenard told The Associated Press. Western Massachusetts, eastern Pennsylvania and portions of New England also reportedly experienced heavy snow accumulation. New York City and Boston saw significant snowfall as well.

And the storm isn't over. The National Weather Service Buffalo wrote in a tweet Monday morning that between 12 and 18 inches of snow will accumulate in Western New York during the day, and between eight and 14 inches in Genesee Valley, Finger Lakes and east of Lake Ontario.

It was a good break from the tv machine. I could use my phone as a hot spot to link to the internets. Temps were fine but some of my frozen food got a bit thawed out..

3. Power outage when the temperature is mild is one thing.

When the temp is well below freezing, it's a whole nother story. You have to stay warm, meaning wearing layers pf clothes in the house if you don't have a fire place or wood stove. Constant worry about your water pipes freezing. Got to keep your pets warm. Can't go out for a nice walk because the cold and wind is bone chilling. Then of course when the storm passes and it's at least bearable to go out, you've got to dig out your car and clear the driveway of snow.

So not quite like losing the power in Tampa for 12 hours.

Sorry about the food that got thawed out.

For me the WORST was when I lived in South Florida. The late august early sept, status post hurricane and no power. The longest for me was after Andrew.. One Week.. The heat and humidity was unbearable. Granted having your home blasted apart by the wind is bad and I would say the post hurricane effects just plain suck...YMMV

5. Western NY - 14 inches accumulation overnight

last night. Has not stopped snowing since 8 pm yesterday. Not sure about today's accumulation, somewhere around 6 to 8 inches so far and still coming down heavily. Winter warning until 10 pm tonight.

6 to 8 inches expected tomorrow, with winds of 30 to 40 mph.

Visibility outside my window right now is very poor, mostly just a white blur.
