Djokovic's appeal of canceled visa moves to higher court

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

MELBOURNE, Australia — Novak Djokovic’s effort to play in the Australian Open despite being unvaccinated for COVID-19 moved to a higher court Saturday as the No. 1-ranked tennis player appealed the second cancellation of his visa.

Djokovic was not seen on the online feed available to the public for the 15-minute procedural hearing, which began just two days before he is scheduled to play his first match of 2022 at Melbourne Park.

Judge David O’Callaghan ruled that lawyers representing Djokovic and the government would need to submit written arguments later Saturday and scheduled a further hearing for Sunday morning.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke blocked the 34-year-old Serb’s visa, which was originally revoked when he landed at a Melbourne airport last week. But it was restored Monday by a judge on procedural grounds, because Djokovic was not allowed to have a lawyer with him at the airport.

1. I'm Still Going To Be Shocked If They Deport Him

Assholes like him always seem to get their way in the end.

I hope he's on a plane home Monday morning, but I'm not holding my breath.

3. He's going to have a problem here in this country come US Open time ...

Because you cannot come into the US un-vaccinated plus the US Open's in NY. Same in the UK, where Wimbledon's played, so he better try to win #21 at the French Open, where I'm told they're pretty lax when it comes to vaccine mandates, masks et al.

Some of these anti-vaxxers are straight out CRAZY

7. America Does Not Have The Fortitude That Australia Does

He'll have No Problem getting in here.

And the U.S. Open is not until September, and there might not be the same restrictions to enter then, especially if the virus is contained during the summer.

8. "If the virus is contained during the summer."

I don't believe it will be contained enough to just go lax with everything because of all these new mutations continuing to take place. I have a lot of friends in the health care industry, because I used to work in it before I became disabled on my job and could no longer work, and they paint a picture of gloom and doom. Many are tired, over-worked and more being threatened and intimidated by patients to the point where many are considering LEAVING nursing. Let me stop there. Anyway, some form of Covid will be with us for a while IMO, and even though NY is a Blue state the folks in charge of the USTA will probably do an El Foldo, and let him in because they want the revenue, and because GQP'ers, along with the cat calls from the side lines courtesy of the mostly right-winged corporate media will make mockery out of the issue that Covid is, and like I said, they'll do an El Foldo. Must be nice to be a white, rich, elitist male (and in many cases, a white female) can almost always do what you want to do, whenever you want to. The GQP US Taliban Party is destroying this country, and nobody's really able to stop them.

6. Seems to me that Australia should certainly have the right to decide who can come into country.

Djokovic is desperately seeking #21. If he is allowed to play, I hope he loses in the 1st round.
