Biden hosts Manchin and Sinema at White House to push for voting rights reforme

Source: Axios

President Biden met with Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) at the White House on Thursday night after the senators reaffirmed their opposition to reforming the filibuster, the White House said.

Why it matters: Biden and other Democrats want the Senate's filibuster rules changed in order to pass voting rights legislation.

A White House spokesperson said Biden had "a candid and respectful exchange of views about voting rights" with Manchin and Sinema, according to a pool report.

2. Perhaps Sinema will put down her phone

long enough to hear what the President is saying to her. It was reported earlier that, at the President's meeting with Senate Democrats on the same topic she rarely stopped looking at her phone while he was speaking.

4. Was thinking the same thing. Biden ahold eat raw onions before the meeting

Damn that tactic doesn't work so well with masks and social distancing.

5. My guess is they discussed BBB as the voting rights bills are now dead.

If judicial appointments weren’t so critical, Biden would likely rip into them publicly or ask Schumer to remove them from committees. However Manchin would just change parties and Sinema would not care because she is there to serve her donors and not the public.

6. Manchin won't change parties because he would never win a Republican primary in WV.

He knows his only chance at elected office is to run as a Democrat.

It's Sinema who looks ready to flip to the GOP.

9. She's actually in just as bad a spot as manchin. She flipped from gqp to dem when she came out as

Bisexual. They really don’t want her. The powers that be in the AZ dem party did their best to warn ppl not to go with her...we should have listened

She’s toast..the AZ Dems are furious..they worked really hard for her and this is how she repays them. They are already talking about who the best primary challenger would be

18. Without a "no Dem challenger" agreement with Dems like Bernie has, Manchin would be toast.

The WV Dem.challenger would sap too many votes for Manchin to win over any GOP challenger.

...what Angus King pulls off in Maine, or what Lieberman pulled off in CT.

7. The time for "respectful exchange of views" is long past.

Biden needs to start flipping furniture and throwing vases.

8. how many times

they going to meet to exchange candid and respectful views?

At least change the verbiage up guys.

I would certainly have wanted to be a fly on the wall though, but everyone who can pressure them has pressured them.

12. It's past time to find

dirt on these two. The Republicans would have blackmailed these two out of office by now if they were in this position. Shocking you say, I'm no longer shock able. We haven't realized that this a war for democracy. I'm tired of billionaires and those paid by them ruining my country.

13. And how does that help?

If either of them is "blackmailed out of office"... we immediately lose the Senate majority.

21. That isn't how it works

The moment one of them resigns, the senate is now 50-49 (or 50-48) republican. Schumer is no longer in control.

Then the governor of WV/AZ (both republicans) appoints a replacement who hold the seat at least through November (becoming the incumbent for that race) and the Senate is now 52-48 republican.

Winning back AZ would be 50/50 at best. Winning back WV is effectively impossible for the foreseeable future.
