Kellogg Workers Prolong Strike by Rejecting Contract Proposal

Source: NY Times

By Noam Scheiber

About 1,400 striking workers at four Kellogg cereal plants in the United States have rejected a tentative agreement on a five-year contract negotiated by their union, the company said on Tuesday.

The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, which represents the workers, did not reveal the vote totals but said in a statement that its members had “overwhelmingly voted” against the agreement.

The strike began on Oct. 5 and has largely revolved around the company’s two-tier compensation structure, agreed to in 2015, in which newer employees earn lower wages and receive less generous benefits than veteran workers. Under the previous contract, the lower tier could include up to 30 percent of workers.

According to a summary provided by the company, the new agreement would have immediately moved all employees with four or more years at Kellogg into the veteran tier. A group of lower-tier employees equivalent to 3 percent of a plant’s head count would move into the veteran tier in each year of the contract.

BCTGM Kellogg’s Members Reject Tentative Agreement; Strike Continues

The statement by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) following the December 5 vote on the tentative agreement between the BCTGM and Kellogg’s:

Members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) on strike against Kellogg’s in Battle Creek, Mich., Lancaster, Pa., Omaha, Neb. and Memphis, Tenn. have overwhelmingly voted to reject the tentative agreement. The strike, which began on October 5, 2021, continues.

Reflecting on the vote, BCTGM International President Anthony Shelton stated, “The members have spoken. The strike continues. The International Union will continue to provide full support to our striking Kellogg’s members.

“The BCTGM is grateful for the outpouring of fraternal support we received from across the labor movement for our striking members at Kellogg’s. Solidarity is critical to this fight.”

4. during the pandemic

this company made out just fine as people ate their products while stuck at home. Pay employees a fair livable wage period. Offer benefits in a socially acceptable manor. Pay your taxes. Be a responsible corporate citizen for the good of society not just shareholders.
