CDC Says Toss Onions If You Don't Know Where They Came From To Avoid Salmonella

Check your onions now: A salmonella outbreak impacting 37 states and sickening over 600 people in the U.S. is being linked to certain imported onions.

A warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fresh whole red, white and yellow onions from Chihuahua, Mexico, were distributed to grocery stores and restaurants across the U.S. by ProSource Inc. They should be discarded.

Officials also urge consumers not to buy any whole red, white or yellow onions without stickers or packaging that show where they're from, and to throw away any such onions that are already in the home. Salmonella traced to onions has sent 129 people to the hospital, the CDC says.

Federal health investigators are working to determine if any additional onions and suppliers are linked to the outbreak. The onions were last imported on Aug. 27. However, officials say they can last in storage for up to three months. The CDC also advises that surfaces and containers that have been in contact with the onions should be washed with hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher...

1. Or cook them well

I know people like raw onions in sandwiches and salads and so on but I don't. I saute or caramelize them. I've pickled some red onions and have those stored in a jar. The vinegar should kill salmonella I hope.

22. I love raw onions, but rarely cook with onions. Garlic on the other hand, I go crazy with.

24. Thanks, I wondered if cooking them (and how much is enough) in order to be safe? I usually use

the red onions in salads (not these anymore) and/or in cooking (caramelize them)...and I (several weeks ago at least) bought a small bag of red onions, they last forever).

25. Salmonella dies easily by cooking vegetables to 131 degrees

more for meat.

Caramelizing onions definitely kills them for sure. Vinegar also kills salmonella if you pickle it.

2. Sigh..... Half of my onions have stickers which say USA on them and half have no stickers.

Logically, I'm highly likely to be in the clear. They're all from the same store but some were bought last week and some the week prior to that, but I don't know which ones were acquired when. The unstickered ones are almost certain to be from the same source. But not absolutely certain...

16. BINGO!!!

This was ME two weeks ago.

I ate an uncooked onion- and six hours later suddenly had a projectile vomiting and diarrhea. A temp of 102.4, and the diarrhea continues for four days. I was sick as a dog- thought it might be Covid- but couldnít get a Covid test for five days, and when it did, it was negative for Covid.

I had purchased a 3 pound bag of yellow onions a few weeks before. I still have some. But this makes me sure thatís exactly what happened to me!!

27. Only if you want them thrown back at you

which is what I told my team leader at a previous job who suggested giving engraved stones to reward people instead of something useful like a gift card.
