Another bruising King-Vilsack debate in Iowa

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Maggie O'Brien

CARROLL, Iowa — The candidates waging a bitter fight to represent northwest Iowa in the U.S. House agreed Thursday that family, work, education and faith are what matter most to the voters who live there.

Those “Iowa values” were about the only topic that Republican U.S. Rep. Steve King and Democratic challenger Christie Vilsack could see eye to eye on as they debated here at the Santa Maria Winery.

They sparred on everything else, attacking each other's records, statements and campaign styles. The restaurant's peaceful setting and the polite crowd did nothing to soften the jabs, which the candidates traded often, though they barely looked at each other.

Vilsack called out King for suggesting that the United States put up an electric fence on the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering. She said he had referred to such a fence as a “cattle prod.”

Christie Vilsack and Rep. Steve King.

Hi,

I just finished another debate with Steve King, and let me tell you, every time he and I have a chance to debate the issues side-by-side, I leave the debate even more committed to winning this race than before.

In tonight's debate, I showed again that I am the only candidate in this race committed to being the Fourth District's voice in Washington -- not a mouthpiece for a national partisan agenda. I hope you had a chance to watch, and I hope I made you proud.

Tomorrow, there will be 11 days left in this race. We know that it will come right down to the wire, but I know that by working together, we can win this.

Will you make a contribution tonight to show that you're standing with me -- and help power our get out the vote effort for the next 11 days?

I'm so proud to be able to count you as one of our allies.

Thank you for your generous support!

Sincerely,

Christie Vilsack

2. King's not a member of the Tea Party Caucus for nothing. Would be great to see him out of congress.

any level of government there. Last election at least one of my friends ended up getting elected to the Sioux City city counsel. I guess that is something. What is really sickening is that this area of Iowa considers itself very Christian. It makes me sick to my stomach.
