George W. Bush calls on Americans to confront domestic violent extremists on 9/11 anniversary

Source: CNN

Former President George W. Bush on Saturday called on Americans to confront domestic violent extremists, comparing them to violent extremists abroad and warning that they are "children of the same foul spirit."

In a speech marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Bush said the US has seen "growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders, but from violence that gathers within."

"There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home," Bush said. "But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit."

"And it is our continuing duty to confront them," he added.

The January 6 insurrectionists were terrorists. George W. Bush just indicted them.

One need not like your opponents, nor fully trust them to accept a benefit from them on the rare occasions they are "in the right."

I may have not agreed with many things President Bush did, but the man has a soul. It's more than can be said of the very people he was chastising. Especially the orange man and his henchmen.

president when he was never cut out to lead. I do believe he has no malice, no evil intent. He is still a persuasive figure politically. Here he is a voice of sanity that can be welcomed without sacrificing principles.

36. He okayed torture

And he gleefully executed prisoners when he was governor of Texas. If he has a soul now, it's because he's grown one since leaving office. What does that say about him?

Given all that, though, I will embrace his saying this. It sounds quite eloquent, very different from him in the past. And it might bring a few sane Republican hangers-on to get with the program and vote for Democrats until their party cleans up its act.

Maybe he gave a good speech today, but he was a puppet and like many republicans, a criminal.

Get a copy of Vincent Bugliosi's book "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder", a pity no AG took on it, he presented a blueprint to prosecute all those murderers of GW's administration.

13. Exactly. When one cannot even acknowledge when your opponent makes a correct observation,

that is very sad indeed.

In fact I believe it diminishes your position, because when an opponent says something you agree with, and instead of saying I agree on that point, you instead go off attacking that person on other things, you have now created a distraction from the point you agree on, and no doubt must make those who are part of the insurrection very pleased

If he really regrets his past actions, then he can man up and take responsibility for them. He caused hundreds of thousands of needless deaths, but hey, he spoke a few words of truth and sanity, and now he's all good in your eyes, huh?

Screw that. He's a war criminal through and through and he's never once apologized or owned any of it and I highly doubt he ever will. The only person who's ridiculous here is you. All it takes is a few sweet words and you instantly forget about the mountain of atrocities he committed. Pathetic.

when the war drums were being beaten. The protests were some of the largest in human history.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_the_Iraq_War

That's not to mention all the other terrible actions that many of us knew were terrible while they were being made. Stealing the 2000 election. Abu Ghraib. The response to Hurricane Katrina. Extraordinary rendition. Torture. Commuting Scooter Libby's sentence. etc.

Maybe he does regret some of it but to say that the criticism is hindsight is simply not true.

52. That is actually the message a lot of republicans/former republicans have been pushing

As in the Bush era neocon types. It's interesting to listen to some of them talk since this whole Trump takeover took place. They often have some progressive-lite type views when it comes to domestic politics. Take the abortion thing in Texas as an example. Many of them are actually promoting ideas of more assistance for pregnant women, programs for children, and healthcare, etc.. Grant you it's a with an "anti-abortion" tinge still, but that's significantly better than the "force them to have the baby and then fuck 'em when it's born" approach. There are similar themes with healthcare, climate change, policing/prison reform, and racial issues too. There is at least some actual view as to why those are important issues, and that makes room for possible real positive change.

But at the same time I wonder if they always felt that way, but they refused to acknowledge it out of cynical political motivations, or did they have some sort of epiphany over the past six years? The cynical side of me suspects it's neither and they just saying the words that they know will continue to keep them relevant while Trump is running the party. I do recall reading something that a lot of these people at one time considered themselves to be politically liberal, but saw the right as their way to power and influence.

I always felt that he really didn't want the job but was torn between trying to win his Daddy's approval (thus the go-ahead to start a war in Iraq) and then pretty much allowing the lackeys behind him, like Cheney, et. al. to make the hard decisions. He'd go along with them because he really had no idea how to lead. He was just a figurehead.

A man like that has no real core principles of his own. However, if he can sway some people in his party or some voters to open their eyes about today's GOP then I'll take it.

60. No one is disagreeing with what he said

about domestic terrorists.

We're just not impressed because he had a major hand in creating them, and not only does he not acknowledge that fact, he likes to still pretend that he didn't kill more innocent people than all terrorists combined. But hey, guess that's right-mindedness to you, 'eh?

46. So war criminal George W. Bush is trying to redeem himself by saying something that Democrats

have known for a long time. But I'm not buying it.

47. I guess whenever he hears the screams of the ghosts of 200,000 Iraqi civilians and...

4,500 American troops in his head, he just paints another shitty, cute doggy picture and it all goes away.

That butcher should crawl back under his luxurious rock, never to be seen again in public life.

The same guy HE appointed to the Texas State Supreme Court? Has he ever called Abbott out, someone who is the very definition of a domestic terrorist?

I did watch (with the sound muted) his speech at Shanksville.

Just revenge in his inept way, nothing more I think.

69. Lying repukes like Bush love torture, propaganda, religious war, bounty hunting women, fascism

There's a lot more than a "little cultural overlap" there. They're the same F-ing thing: terrorists.

... mixed feelings. Interesting how "the media" suddenly discovered Afghanistan, but not the Administration responsible for its failures. Still, that was a great speech! I hope we learn the speechwriter (or writers) name!

when he finally dies I would be tempted to visit his grave if I had the financial means to do so just to piss on it and the same goes for Trump.

by big business government contracting and oil leases from slipping away into full throttled fascism/privatization of assets and businesses as the state melts into weakness and autocracy.

He and his cronies lit this fire and stoked it by invading a country that did nothing to us. Now we have radicalized military people attacking our own Capitol.

I will give him this much credit: He doesn't sound any dumber than he did when he was President.

Then again, when someone possesses all the intellectual prowess and dynamism of a lobotomized macaque, how much dumber can they possibly get with the passage of time?
