"HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head Saturday in Hampton County, according to his lawyer Jim Griffin.
Griffin said he found out through Alex's brother, Randy.
Alex was changing a tire when a car passed him. The car turned around and the motorist shot him in the head, according to Griffin. Alex is being airlifted to Charleston.
State Law Enforcement Division has been requested to investigate the shooting."

The craziest "Whodunnit?" mystery currently going on in the U.S. just got crazier.
This saga is going to spawn all manner of TV specials and books once it gets sorted out.
The corruption in South Carolina must be bottomless.

Murdaugh Murder Mystery Timeline: Solicitor intends to recuse himself from double homicide case
News of the deaths of Paul Murdaugh, 22, and Maggie Murdaugh, 52, has led to national headlines. Not only for the mystery surrounding their murders but for the ties to other deaths in the Lowcountry of South Carolina: Stephen Smith in 2015 and Mallory Beach in 2019.
They left out the mysterious death of their housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died in 2018 from a trip and fall, which cost Alex 500 large in a wrongful death lawsuit, the details of which are completely murky.

(4,069 posts)thanks in no small part to the mans two brothers going on Good Morning America and raising more questions than they answered.
Its also a microcosm of whats wrong with this country - if you have enough money you can seemingly get away with murder. Several times over.
Its basically as though two members of the Trump family had been murdered and all fingers pointed to Donald, and in the investigation of those killings a whole bunch of dirt came up in previous unsolved cases, but on a smaller scale.

(5,737 posts)Reading the thread earlier, this struck me as a significant story beyond the state where it happened, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why. Coming back to read later posts, I find that you have spelled it out.

(4,069 posts)I want to call peoples attention to it because even though it is local it is significant and emblematic of a larger problem in our society.
Hopefully this case is opening the eyes of the people in the lowlands of South Carolina and shining a light on the rot that is their justice system, and hopefully, by all of us rooting out the corruption locally we can begin to do it nationally.
I love this country but we are currently very, very sick.

(58 posts)Alex's father, "Buster" Murdaugh was a close friend of my father before my father died in 1981. The bridge where Paul drove his boat carrying Mallory Beach into the bridge piles after a day and night of drinking, is the bridge going on to Parris Island from Port Royal, SC. I have fished under that bridge 100s, if not 1000s, of times.
The Smith "accident" was always strange considering that he "Smith" was gay, and was having an affair with Alex's other son. The Smith boy's car was located and removed from the Murdaugh estate about 2 months ago. It was discovered during the search of the property for evidence in the gangland style murder of Paul and his mother.
This story gets wierder by the moment.

(58 posts)After being admitted to Memorial medical Center in Savannah, Georgia yesterday, blood tests were drawn. As a result of those blood tests, today, shortly after noon, Alex Murdaugh resigned from his Law Firm and admitted himself to a drug rehab facility.
My sources have told me that Alex Murdaugh has a 10-15 pills per day, Percocet habit.
The faicial wound was deemed superficial and authorities have not been able to establish the presence of another vehicle at the crime scene.
This is going to make a great movie once SLED and the FBI get it all figured out. Anyone want to take bets on when the suicide takes place?

(55,230 posts)P-Nutt must be watching the same TV news I'm watching. See his post, just before this one.
I get the impression that this was a self-inflicted wound, delivered so as to be superficial.
Weirdness upon weirdness.

Two days after he was wounded in a shooting, attorney Alex Murdaugh announced that he is quitting his law firm and entering rehab to deal with issues aggravated by the unsolved killings of his wife and son nearly three months ago.
In a written statement issued Sept. 6, Murdaugh didnt mention the weekend incident in which he was shot in the head in Hampton County. Rather, he spoke of his struggles in the wake of the June 7 shooting that claimed the lives of his son Paul, 22, and his wife Maggie, 52. They were slain at the familys rural hunting lodge along the Hampton and Colleton county lines.
The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life, Murdaugh stated. I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret. Im resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders.
I am immensely sorry to everyone Ive hurt including my family, friends and colleagues, he said. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.
Murdaugh did not elaborate on the decisions he referred to in his statement, nor did he divulge what he will be treated for in rehab. As of Sept. 5, he was recovering in a Savannah hospital from what the State Law Enforcement Division described as a superficial gunshot wound to the head.

(58 posts)Earlier today and they indicated that this whole thing is suspicious.
I know one of my State Senators who is also an Attorney. He indicated that this was all going to happen in a converstaion this moring. Alex has a big bull's eye on him from both SLED and the FBI over the killings of his wife and son. The Smith murder is one of the things driving all of this. Alex is doing his best to keep the family skeletons in the closet, but people keep on opening them up.
There will be a suicide before this ends. Mark my words.

(58 posts)Are hoping so. Being the Solicitor for this many Counties for that many years, the list of enemies is long. We live in the throws of the "Good Ole Boys" network. I remember growing up and a local shrimper drug up a black man wrapped in a burlap sack and and bound with car chains. One of our local law enforcement officers made the remark that he had obviously stolen too many chains to swim away with.
The Murdaugh famiy is reaping the rewards of their past indiscretions. I haven't talked to anyone lately that has the least bit of sympathy for him. Mallory Beach's family, while connected, is not nearly as connected as Alex Murdaugh. I really do not see them being involved. Same with the Smith family. But someone is repaying some long overdue bills.
I have a hunch there will be more developments shortly
Thanks for sharing your perspective and insights

(58 posts)That he was forced to resign from his law firm on FRIDAY. Before the allged shooting Saturday. He was forced to resign for stealing over a million dollars.
And just when you thouth it was twisted enough.........
P-Nutt
(58 posts)SLED has had him under surveillance. He is the #1 suspect in his wife and son's murders. His own Law Firm, including his brothers, turned him in to SLED for the theft. It is believed that he was in the process of trying to run from al of this. Popcorn? Anyone have some more popcorn? This is going to make one hell of a movie.
P-Nutt
(58 posts)There are yet more new developments. About the flat tire........he had run flat tires and one was sliced with a knife. SLED has discovered the knife, and it belongs to Alex Murdaugh. He left MMC in Savannah yesterday morning and has checked himself in to a drug rehab program for Oxycodone.
He was fired from his Law Firm Friday for stealing in excess of 1 million dollars. His Firm reported him to SLED, and has filed to have his Law License revoked.
About the murders of his wife and son, SLED has now said that Maggie Murdaugh had requested a fornsic audit of the family finances just days before her murder.
The movie rights to this will be amazing. BTW, the NYT, CNN, Court TV and all local TV stations are running this story virtually nonstop now.

(4,069 posts)did the oldest son murder his gay lover too?
SC is the new Bardstown.

(58 posts)Is now one of SLED's investigations. SLED Agent Tommy Crosby issued a statement this afternoon and said that no further information would be available because of several ongoing investigations.
I do not believe that the eldest son was involved in the Smith "accident". But I do believe that he was killed because of his relationship with the Murdaugh boy. Smith was just 15 years old at the time.
Maggie Murdaugh came from old money. The word on the street is that she was in the early stages of prepairing to divorce Alex. These people have skeletons hidden in closets everywhere. They are desparate to keep them hidden. Appearances mean a lot to them. The word is that Alex was going to bail on Paul for the death of mallory Beach, and that Paul was about to let some of those skeletons out. Paul had been in trouble his entire life. He was bailed out of a mess when he killed a driver in a drunken hit and run. He also pushed a family housekeeper down a flight of stairs as a youngster. Alex had apparently had his fill with covering up for him.
The night of the boat accident that killed Mallory beach, Alex, Buster, and Alex's brother Randy, were all on the scene telling SC Wildlife what they could and could not due. There is a whole other investigation into those actions with regards to obstructing an investigation. You are talking about people with direct connections to Gov. McMaster and AG Wilson. They are connected.
Definitely going to make for a great movie. This is 1950s era law enforcement going on in 2020 and beyond.

I haven't even mentioned the family housekepper who died from mysteriously tripping and falling down the steps.
