Justice Department says Russians hacked federal prosecutors

Source: AP

By ALAN SUDERMAN and ERIC TUCKER

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Russian hackers behind the massive SolarWinds cyberespionage campaign broke into the email accounts some of the most prominent federal prosecutors’ offices around the country last year, the Justice Department said.

The department said 80% of Microsoft email accounts used by employees in the four U.S. attorney offices in New York were breached. All told, the Justice Department said 27 U.S. Attorney offices had at least one employee’s email account compromised during the hacking campaign.

The Justice Department said in a statement Friday that it believes the accounts were compromised from May 7 to Dec. 27, 2020. Such a timeframe is notable because the SolarWinds campaign, which infiltrated dozens of private-sector companies and think tanks as well as at least nine U.S. government agencies, was first discovered and publicized in mid-December.

The Biden administration in April announced sanctions, including the expulsion of Russian diplomats, in response to the SolarWinds hack and Russian interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Russia has denied wrongdoing.

1) I wonder if these people are still going to be Trump fans after they find out what a traitor to
America he was and still is. I might be wrong but I think he deliberately weakened our cyber security
on orders from Putin and to "pay off" the tens of millions he owes Russia, Russian run banks, and the
Russian mob.

2) Putin has been successful beyond his wildest dream in weakening America by getting TFG into
the White House. That really has opened up a real split in America. Look at his dumb fuck followers
who still refuse to wear a mask, get a C-19 vaccine, and or acknowledge that Biden won the election.

.... and for 1 reason and 1 reason only and that is racism. TFG scratches that itch on them and it feels
real good to them. Funny thing is that a good % of Trump's base that still support him now claim to be
"good Christians" but at the end of the day they like the racism and "owning the libs." Forget about the
fact that if the biblical Jesus is true he would have been a man of color.

my guess--lots of heart attacks, strokes, etc.

Good thoughts on the racism bit. Most likely spot on.

.... the benefit of Russia/Putin. Hey, Trump fired the head of our cyber security operations twice
and what do you know we get hacked by Russia. Just like Trump kept repeating an old Soviet Union
talking point that goes back to 1970s which was that the other NATO nations were taking advantage of
the United States in terms of money and military "stuff."

He doesn't care a twit about acting to benefit our country or allies. That is for losers as far as he's concerned.

entrances that it can use to move data out into the world from, but doesn't have to allow entry through.

I read that and saw a map of some of the gateway entrances around the world, but I don't think it's online anymore. Maybe someone can check on that.

Even if some nation could gain access to Russia's interweb systems and hack stuff or disable stuff, the world wouldn't likely hear about it, so only Russian and the hackers would know.

Notice where you see cable lines moving, and where entry points form on land masses.
Notice also that you see lines already set up around some places where the lines move past, so the video doesn't help us to know all the ones laid earliest or where.
There are also isolated non-connection spots like Cyprus (Wilbur Ross and the Bank of Cyprus come to mind) that only connect to the Sinai Peninsula, and pinch points like Hawaii in the Pacific.
It's visual info but still limited in showing who got first cable dibs and how nations' gateway points are used. Once inland, we don't know what networks connect to what gateways.

you could be right that it's entirely doable. It's seems complicated, and maybe is, even if it's just a matter of rerouting other national users from their cables and then maybe just cutting. For us outsiders of cable laying corporations, we wouldn't know how they could do it. And from this incomplete map, we can hardly tell from just seeing the 5 points of entry here (and not the other 7) just where we could shut them down. Still, I think you're right and believe we could.
