Rep. Madison Cawthorn tried to board plane with gun; could face fine, status loss

Source: USA Today

ASHEVILLE - U.S. House member Madison Cawthorn had his gun taken by airport police and will likely face a federal fine and loss of a special security status, local and federal officials said.

The Republican congressman representing Western North Carolina's 11th District was attempting to board a plane Feb. 13 when Transportation Security Administration workers found an unloaded gun in his carry-on bag, along with a loaded magazine, according to Asheville Regional Airport officials.

The weapon was described in a redacted incident report and police radio traffic recordings as a "Glock 9mm handgun."

Cawthorn, whose spokesman responded to questions July 30 saying he brought the gun by mistake, was not charged with any crime, according to reports and other information on the incident obtained this month through a public records request. That is a normal outcome, said spokeswoman Tina Kinsey.

Because that is likely to really inconvenience people, make them hyper aware so they don't make the same "mistake" in the future.

Fines only work to teach people a lesson of they are big proportionate to the person's wealth. The fine could could literally be unnoticeable if the person is rich enough. And, of course, most people don't have a special security status to lose.

I’m not buying it. Some people think they are above the law and this guy is the worst. He thinks because he’s disabled he deserves extra sympathy while acting like an asshole.

Disabled people don’t need or want special weapon privileges. How do I know? Because I’m in the same shape as Cawthorn but I’m not an asshole nor would I try to sneak a weapon on my carry-on bag.

Lock him up.

You don't accidentally throw a gun and a loaded magazine into your carryon bag. It's not like it is a razor or a toothbrush. Though I don't understand how he thought he could get away with it.

No way this was a "mistake."

I wonder if he really thought he could get away with it OR did he do it on purpose, knowing he'd get caught, so he could play 2nd amendment martyr? A stunt like that would not be out of character for that little weasel, imnsho.

Right.

He can fly with his firearm IF he declares it.

RollerNazi has got to go. All these Republican ignoramuses who were complicit Cawthorn tweeted It's go time or some other treasonous crap early on Jan 6. Leading the way with his camo BigWheel, beating the bark off of dead saplings and clearing the way for TREASONOUS Dominionist hordes

Democrats, please go after the fucking guns, and rid Congress of these scofflaws and petty criminals.

The gun also must be in a locked case, and there can be no ammunition in the gun. You must personally hand the gun to an employee of the airline; the "curbside check-in" thing they have sitting outside so you can drop off your bags before going in can't be used for guns. You can put ammo in the same case as the unloaded firearm. Wheelalong Cawthorne was trying to bring one into the cabin, which wasn't even legal before 9-11.

Homeschooled, Naval Academy Reject, One semester Junior College D average dropout (he blamed on his ex fiancee); and a reputation for taking girls on Fun Rides to isolated places for grope and go. One semester, and he had a reputation as the handsy boy in the wheel chair who didn't understand No.

He has unpaid property taxes on his $425K home here in Hendersonville. He married his wife, another cross fit warrior, I think, in December but lied about it and threw a big wedding in the spring during Covid, because it would have been too complicated to add a wife to his benefits package after he got to DC.

The local GOP wants him gone. Billboard in his hometown, on the heavily traveled Interstate Anyone But Cawthorn.

His accident? He and his buddy were changing seats while driving. His best friend pulled him from the wreckage, and Cawthorn lied to get a bigger settlement, saying his friend left him for dead. He lied about his accident's impact on his Naval Academy admission, he lied about admission to Harvard (!)

He's an attention seeking fund raiser, who refuses to hold a town hall with his constituents. Empty headed, empty suit hiding behind his wheelchair.

He doesn't realize his fascist nazi heroes would have exterminated him, too.

That he can be such a huge fan of Hitler and NOT be aware that people with mental and physical disabilities were among the fuehrer's first targets for systematic extermination says volumes to me about the utter vastness of Cawthorne's stupidity. If he thinks being a white "Christian" male would have saved him from Hitler's "Euthanasia Program," I have a very nice bridge I'd like to sell him.

Another gubment plot to take his gun AND his BuyBull. He should be Forced to be vaxed for this. No door to door Biden thugs were gonna get his gun and BuyBull. What a snot nosed prick. And just think, HE replaced a huge criminal Trump asskisser that should be tried for treason. North Carolina 11th. We should be so fucking proud. Those two actually “represent” us. We should lose voting rights for choosing those two criminal shits for brains. Florida summer residents and tourist so thick here, they’ve infected our brains with “Florida Man” syndrome. When trump is reinstated in August, Meadows will be VP, and Cawthorn will get his job at the white house.
