Sunisa Lee wins gold medal for United States in women's gymnastics all-around competition

Source: Washington Post

TOKYO ó Sunisa Lee, an 18-year-old from Minnesota, won the Olympic all-around title in a competition that came down to the final routines. Team USA has won every all-around title at the Games since 2004, and even after Simone Biles withdrew as she continues to work through mental health struggles, the Americansí streak remains intact.

Rebeca Andrade of Brazil had an opportunity to climb ahead of Lee with her floor routine, but she went out of bounds twice and finished fewer than two tenths behind. Lee earned a 57.433, and Andrade finished with a 57.298. With an immense amount of pressure during the final rotation, Lee hit her floor routine with poise and earned the best score sheís gotten on that apparatus at these Games.

B. You would probably have encountered it somewhere else, unless this is the only news site you EVER go to. NBC does not have exclusive rights to the headines.
C. No one asked you to comment.
D. NO, I'm NOT sorry I posted it.

37. You say, "I am avoiding 'all other' news sources," so you obviously consider DU a news source.

If this is so important to you, why would you avoid all other news sources but not DU? Many people subscribe to Breaking News alerts on their phones. I get a ton of these each day, including the one about Ms. Lee. Basically, you'd have to keep the TV off, stay off your computer, not listen to the radio, not go to any websites that might report on this (insert long, long list of sites to avoid), not to mention Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and any other forum. Why do people on DU have to be the exception? I just don't get it.

Thus the "spoiler alert" which appears in many OPs.

I guess "thoughtful" is the key word here.

66. IMO - Spoiler alerts are for recently released movies

Or popular shows that have broadcast on the east coast but not yet the west coast.

They aren't for breaking news that comes at you from all directions.

If you taped the football game and can't watch it until later tonight because you're at work... it's on you to ask your coworkers not to spoil it for you and then to avoid all news sources. It isn't on everyone else to guess who has and hasn't read the news.

Goodness... why even have an LBN forum?

72. Scan through this thread. Apparently many do not share your opinion.

Skinner himself posted a request for posters to be thoughtful in avoiding the posting of spoilers during the last Olympics. It was then, and is now, simple common courtesy.
Attempts to equate an ordinary breaking news story with the results of an athletic contest which is on delayed broadcast all across the country seem contrived.

As I said, it's all about being thoughtful. The creator of this forum, and many posters herein have made a simple request.
Honor it, or don't.
It's your call.

76. They appear to be in the clear minority

Plus... there are the dozens of DUers who rec'd it who clearly didn't think it was an issue.

Skinner himself posted a request...

He also made clear that you shouldn't be on DU if you care that strongly about it. He didn't actually request a lack of spoilers... just an attempt to keep them out of thread titles. Which is reasonable, but also conflicts with the LBN rules.

78. As I said, it's your call.

Skinner's post was a clear and unambiguous request for what he called "common courtesy".

And yes, he also acknowledged that said courtesy is not in everyone's skill set. If that includes multiple posters, then so be it.

For me, an "it's not against the rules so I can do it and fuck anyone who is inconvenienced" mindset seems like a better fit for a rightwing forum.

YMMV

85. You're misrepresenting his statement

He only asked that you avoid putting the spoiler in the title of the thread. He didn't advocate "avoiding the posting of spoilers" as you claim. He never advocated avoiding discussing worldwide breaking news, (since that's... um... the purpose of the site) to facilitate someone else's entertainment.

The problem with that in the current scenario is that LBN doesn't give you that option.

89. Now you're either being disingenuous or deliberately obtuse.

"He only asked that you avoid putting the spoiler in the title of the thread."
No kidding. And exactly what is it that people are objecting to in this thread?

Secondly, contrary to your "worldwide breaking news" strawman, Skinner explicitly advocated that people refrain from posting Olympic results from events that were on a delayed broadcast for the specific purpose of "facilitating someone else's entertainment" (ie: not knowing the results of an event prior to viewing it). "Misrepresenting" is way too polite a word to describe what you are doing with regard to his statement.

We're done here, and you're welcome to the last word. If I feel the need to listen to tortured logic and mendacity, I'll tune into Fox.

90. So you admit that it's not spoilers in general...

But wonít even address the fact that this was a suggestion while the LBN standards are not suggestions but rules?

I suppose we can leave the apparent hypocrisy of calling for ďcommon courtesy ď while lacking entirely in civility to the audience.

60. I consider this a message board

that people make comments, not a news source in the sense as msn, local paper, etc. Articles posted by DU members, not journalists. Given that, some etiquette isn't asking too much. This subject comes up each Olympics, World Cup, etc. Hence, the exception.

I don't own a smart phone, so I do not receive news alerts. And yes, I stay of the TV and FB until prime time, all radio, all news outlets, never have been on Twitter/Instagram/Reddit/etc.

62. You expect a lot more of people than I do!

Message boards have rules and some semblance of enforcing those rules. Anything that falls outside of posting rules, I assume is fair game. If this is really that important to people, I think there should be a separate forum/topic for the Olympics with specific posting rules (like LBN) that are made clear to posters.

Despite all the injuries, family crises woth her dad being paralyzed & close relatives passing bc of covid, not to mention the weight of the entire country for her to bring home the gold, she plowed on thru immense pressure with such dignity, grace & an impressive dose of fortitude. False equivalency. The WS is broadcast live in the USA. It can be viewed in realtime.

Today's event is not scheduled to be broadcast in the USA until Thursday evening.

It's considered poor taste to post spoilers prior to the broadcast.

I was looking forward to viewing it and enjoying the suspense leading up to the conclusion. That enjoyment has been taken away.

69. Well, I browse Greatest threads not LBN, and I ran across it. That's why people are angry.

77. DU needs to change the name of LBN.

Something to make it clear that this potentially contains up-to-date immediate news.

34. Wow, I've only been on DU for a couple of years but this tread is by far the worst I've ever seen.

The anger and FU attitude of some of the posters towards other members of DU is really amazing to me. There seems to be as much anger on this line as I often hear there is on RW lines. Give it a break people. AND be thrilled that Sunisa Lee won the gold. Good on her. She did herself and her country proud.

86. +1.

Well, maybe not the worst I've ever seen--I survived the Hillary/Bernie wars here--but the worst that isn't about political differences.

The funny thing is, it didn't spoil anything for me. It made me want to see her performance.

Anyway, good on her indeed.

88. back atcha and we'll both enjoy watching her performance. Yeah, maybe I'm glad

I missed the Hillary/Bernie wars. It's not that I don't get angry I just don't see the reason to take it out on other...at least those I think of as friends and allies. Yes, I can be pretty naÔve. But, I've made it to 75 trying to see the best in others rather than the worse. Seems the last 4 years have kind of stretched all of us.

35. My Hmong Coworkers are into the olympics!

Now I know why! My community/area accepted thousands of Hmong. They are great people. And it is Sunisa Lee who puts a star on top.

42. Excellent! And further confirmation that Simone did the right thing for her team.

Simone knew she couldn't perform at her best and would cost her team, who are all amazing gymnasts. So she withdraw so they could shine. Now they won the gold! Yay!

45. No need to take anything away from Lee's victory

Biles' did the right thing for her team in team competition.

But this is an individual award that Lee very likely would have won even if Biles had elected to compete. Biles' decision not to compete here gave another teammate an opportunity to compete, but didn't give Lee the win. She earned it all by herself.

46. OMG, I'm not taking anything away. I said they're ALL amazing gymnasts, as this gold shows.

Who the fuck said Lee didn't earn it by herself??

Man, I agree with what others have said about the comments on this thread.

51. You said it confirmed Biles' decision to step back

It didnít.

That decision was confirmed during the team competition and didnít impact this win at all. Lee didnít shine because of Bilesí decision. She shined all by herself.

56. Nope.

AgainÖ she shined and earned the spotlight independent of Bilesí decision.

In fact, itís pretty clear that she would have won with or without Bilesí participation. As she did on one day during the US championship

58. OFFS. If Simone had landed on her head during this, what would the headline be?

Instead of Simone being in the competition and everyone talking about her stumbles, the spotlight and attention was completely on Lee and her spectacular gold-winning performance.

68. The headline would be the same

"Sunisa Lee wins gold medal for United States in women's gymnastics all-around competition"

Later in the article there might be brief commentary on others who didn't win (as there were here)... and perhaps Biles would get her own articles about falling on her head.

But the news is that Sunisa Lee won. Not confirming anything other than today she was the best in the world. Again, Biles backed out for her team in the team competition. She backed out here for whoever was the #4 woman on the team. Not Lee.

Sure, they would have reported Lee's gold, but it would have been overshadowed by Simone's stumble.

50. Congrats to her and the rest of the team and a note to the newer DUers

Traditionally, in the past, the DU owners would post an announcement about "Spoilers" as a courtesy. For example this (copied and pasted and note that we can no longer use certain BBS code tags so they are included in the copy/paste but are not functional) - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10133533

Skinner (63,645 posts) Wed Feb 5, 2014, 12:34 PM

Some advice about the Olympics and possible spoilers

This discussion thread was locked by Skinner (a host of the Announcements group).

As everyone here is probably aware, the Winter Olympics start this week. And once again NBC is going to be showing many events on tape-delay during primetime. That means that many DU members will probably not see the events when they are actually happening, and will instead see them for the first time during primetime -- hours after they have actually happened. This of course raises the possibility of "spoilers" -- when you learn the outcome of the event before you actually watch it.

With this in mind, here are a few thoughts...

Advice for people posting about the Olympics on DU

  • Thread titles: If you want to post about the Olympics it is common courtesy to refrain from posting spoilers in the subject line of a discussion thread. Posting spoilers in the subject line of a thread is considered rude by many people and may put your thread at risk of being hidden by a Jury.

  • Repeatedly posting spoilers on purpose: During the last Olympics, one person loudly and proudly proclaimed that he was deliberately posting spoilers for every event (for what he believed was a perfectly good reason). Even if you think you have a perfectly good reason for maliciously disrupting DU in this manner, don't do it.

  • Advice for people reading DU during the Olympics

  • If you feel strongly that you do not want to accidentally encounter Olympics spoilers, you should not be on Democratic Underground or any other social media during the Olympics. That is just a fact.

  • You should assume that any discussion thread about the Olympics will include spoilers even if there is no "spoiler alert" warning in the title.

  • And on a related note...

There are a number of DUers who have already indicated that they intend to boycott the Olympics this year to protest the horrific treatment of LGBT people in Russia, and the laws passed by the Russian government which serve to legitimize anti-gay hate. If you decide to watch the Olympics, and discuss the Olympics here on Democratic Underground, you should not be surprised if some DU members question the appropriateness of your decision to watch. I fully expect this discussion to occur here on DU, and I hope that members who choose to engage in a discussion on this topic will make an effort to remain respectful.

Of course Skinner is no longer with us, but for those who see the complaints, this was something that goes way back (even before the above). And LBN does require using the "exact" headline.

    59. Thank you for posting this

And I would add, to those who are flaming me, that I didn't think people would be THAT upset. I posted in a moment of joy after seeing the headline and reading the story in WaPo, and I'm still kind of on the side of just skim on by. You would encounter the headline anyway unless this is the only site you read. But I won't do it again.

    64. This was something happening every 2 years

with some Olympics that would happen (since the summer and winter Olympics alternated that way) - and if anything, this one was delayed a year.

I personally don't care either way but I know in the past, I have seen the same type of angst and understood that some do like to be surprised, so the " *SPOILERS* " addition to an OP was helpful for those who wanted to wait to view the whole thing, plus they could trash by keyword the term "SPOILERS" or "Olympics", etc. But putting it in LBN makes that hard to do because of the strict criteria.

    61. Skinner also advises members NOT TO GO ON DU if they feel strongly about not encountering spoilers

and to stay off any other social media, and that members should assume that any discussion thread about the Olympics will contain spoilers. Makes sense to me.

    65. Yes

That was his way of also saying "be advised if". It was never a mandate.

But I wanted to post one of those types of notices for newer DUers who are wondering what the heck people are talking about regarding "spoilers" and the fussing back and forth about it. It is typical DU.

    63. During the Vancouver Winter Olympics

NBC delayed their coverage so that they could air it at prime time - on the East Coast. For those of us watching in the Pacific time zone - where this was all occurring live - this meant that events were delayed by 27 hours.

Stuff happens in real time, not when it's convenient for NBC's viewers.
