Log Cabin Republicans Offer “Qualified” Endorsement Of Mitt Romney
Source: BuzzFeed
Despite delay, despite Romney's support for a federal marriage amendment, and despite saying other races will be their priority, the group of gay Republicans backs Romney's presidential bid.
posted Oct 23, 2012 10:17am EDT
After much delay, Log Cabin Republicans an organization of gay Republicans announced today that it has issued a "qualified endorsement" of Mitt Romney for president. The organization did so despite Romney's recently renewed support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying.
In explaining the move, the organization states in its full endorsement statement, "The qualified nature of this endorsement means that Log Cabin Republicans will be most active in our support for House and Senate candidates. ... While many of our members will also be working hard on behalf of Governor Romney, growing the pro-equality Republican presence in the House and Senate is our highest electoral priority this year."
In its broad news release, however, it did not note the endorsement as "qualified," saying only "the National Board of Directors of the Log Cabin Republicans has elected to endorse Governor Romney for president."
R. Clarke Cooper, the group's executive director, defended the endorsement in a statement, saying "Despite our disagreement with Governor Romney on the issue of marriage, on balance it is clear that in today's economic climate, concern for the future of our country must be the highest priority. We are Republicans, and we agree with Governor Romney's vision for America in which success is a virtue, equal opportunity is ensured, and leaders recognize that it is the American people, not government, that build our nation and fuel its prosperity."

(49 posts)Even though I know quite a few gay republicans. it's about economics not social issues.
but still... they're just shooting themselves in the head.
at this point I don't think there is even one justification for voting republican ever!
maybe 40 years ago when there was a bit of common sense in the party (Nixon started the EPA after all) but since ray-gun the party has lost any sense of legitimacy imho.
and yes I've always voted Democratic in elections.
I held my nose for Al Gore (I was younger and stupid) but he was still the better candidate.
I wasn't as educated in politics as I am now, so I believed a lot of the BS hype... I still preferred him over *

(490 posts)Really? Because the repugs and baggers have been so good at math. I think it's self hatred. They want someone to put them down, to be the bully. Not that they liked the bully, but they knew the bully.

(7,865 posts)I think you are a hundred precent correct on this matter. Only if all of the Log Cabin Republicans are in the upper 1% income bracket (or have been deluded into sympathy with that braket) can "economics" be a reasonable reason.

(43 posts)I've never understood the homosexual friends we have that are hardcore Catholics (being baptised, raised, and attended 13 years of Catholic school myself). A few have even made the journey to the Vatican and get outright giddy over showing you the photographs. I ask them why/how ... they hate you, they demonize you. I just don't understand. Is it some manner of self-hatred?

That's where they sprang from originally. And they still make me sick.

(13,418 posts)is gay doesn't mean one isn't RACIST. Believe it or not...there are greedy and racist gay people out there.
And there is even the possibility that some gay men like the Mormon philosophy toward women: "To bear, to rear, to love."
Now I suppose, I will be burned at the stake.

(13,418 posts)that some gay people are racists? Racism afflicts all kinds of people. It may be a reason that some gay people are voting for Mi$$.

(27,275 posts)having been out for over 30 years, i know damn well that their are some gay racists. these log cabin types want so badly to join the white alpha group that they are willing to screw over themselves and other gay people...especially the black and brown ones. they think money shields them from some of the realities of being LBGT in america, and to some extent it does. but to support a party that means harm to those in your community who don't have tons of money...well, that's the definition of a traitor.

I'm having to endure advertisement after advertisement...I have to keep the remote by my side so I can 'mute' RobMe. I bet CA has few TV ads.
Is it Boxer's term that is up?? Or Diane's? I assume the Dem will win. I remember voting for Boxer in 1984...I think she was running for Congress for the first time. I lived in Mill Valley....Oh, those were the days and worked in the City. I was very lucky to have lived in one of the most progressive and beautiful places in the world, imho.
Now I'm back in Ohio and everything is just blah. The food, the people....but the fall trees have been pretty. And unlike most I like the snow as long as the temps stay above 20 degrees. Summer is HELL...I miss the fog then.
P.S. Halloween was such a blast in the City! What great parties.

(27,275 posts)i voted for her because don't do republicon...period. as someone mentioned in another thread, living here in california i have that luxury...not always the case in other places. i don't want to leave the bay, but considering bracing myself and heading to the south in a few years. the good thing about the south is their is (and has been) a migration of folks (especially african-americans) to the south from the north and the west. my sister made that transition from LA a few years. ago. I feel your pain...the bay is the BEST.

I was in SF when DIFI was mayor of SF. And now she is a Senator. I'm with you....I've never voted for a Repugnant. Sometimes, I have to hold my nose and vote for the Dem.
Sherrod Brown is up for OH Senator. He has to win. His opponent is only 34 yrs. old and has held 4 political positions in 7 years. He's a real brat. I just want to spank him. He hates women...the feeling is mutual. How do these dudes get away with supporting rapists????

(2,594 posts)but this takes the effin' cake.
I can't believe, let enough understand, how it is that people would actually be able to bring themselves to cast a ballot for the same rethug cretins who would just as soon see every GLBT person in the world strung over a barbwire fence like Matthew Shephard. I wouldn't even be able to muster enough concern to even spit on these hateful asshats politicos if they were on fire. It just boggles my mind that roughly half of the population of the United States can reconcile themselves to the fact that they repeatedly make decisions and vote for people that are openly and notoriously against their own personal and economic self-interests.

"today's economic climate." WTF would that one be??? the improving economy??? They also share a vision of America where the middle class jobs continue to flow to China and India because of Romney's business model (from which he has lived without a job, supporting numerous estates, btw,) and denying services to the poor, while deriding the 47% for their existence??
Fuck them. They're a bunch of republican lobbyists who happen to be gay.

(1,770 posts)RW Gays, hereby know as "garbage", will never endorse a D. The reason being if not closeted to their family, they know they will be disinherited if it becomes known they voted D. It's all about the self-hate and the money. They claim "change from within", but it's NEVER happened in their existence and has only gotten worse. Most tend to be rich Hollywood Rethugs who live in their own little bubble, like Marc Cherry, creator of "Desperate Housewives". No concept of what life is for gay people in the real world at the hand of the RW. These pieces of garbage are as delusional, self-hating, and sociopathic as a certain candidate known as The Stench.

(2,957 posts)Gays aren't by necessity or nature liberals and can't be treated as such. A conservative gay person is not an oxymoron.
But, supporting a party that is monolithically against your very nature, being, existence and equal rights - even if that party has other policy positions you agree with - is just plain crazy.
There are plenty of black people who have some favoritism toward states rights, I'm sure. But, I can't see them voting for a candidate who's openly a KKK member because of that. Gays who vote Republican are essentially voting in favor of their own expulsion from being equals in this society - even if they are free-marketeers and government haters.
