Log Cabin Republicans Offer “Qualified” Endorsement Of Mitt Romney

Source: BuzzFeed

Despite delay, despite Romney's support for a federal marriage amendment, and despite saying other races will be their priority, the group of gay Republicans backs Romney's presidential bid.

posted Oct 23, 2012 10:17am EDT

After much delay, Log Cabin Republicans — an organization of gay Republicans — announced today that it has issued a "qualified endorsement" of Mitt Romney for president. The organization did so despite Romney's recently renewed support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying.

In explaining the move, the organization states in its full endorsement statement, "The qualified nature of this endorsement means that Log Cabin Republicans will be most active in our support for House and Senate candidates. ... While many of our members will also be working hard on behalf of Governor Romney, growing the pro-equality Republican presence in the House and Senate is our highest electoral priority this year."

In its broad news release, however, it did not note the endorsement as "qualified," saying only "the National Board of Directors of the Log Cabin Republicans has elected to endorse Governor Romney for president."

R. Clarke Cooper, the group's executive director, defended the endorsement in a statement, saying "Despite our disagreement with Governor Romney on the issue of marriage, on balance it is clear that in today's economic climate, concern for the future of our country must be the highest priority. We are Republicans, and we agree with Governor Romney's vision for America in which success is a virtue, equal opportunity is ensured, and leaders recognize that it is the American people, not government, that build our nation and fuel its prosperity."

Even though I know quite a few gay republicans. it's about economics not social issues.
but still... they're just shooting themselves in the head.
at this point I don't think there is even one justification for voting republican ever!
maybe 40 years ago when there was a bit of common sense in the party (Nixon started the EPA after all) but since ray-gun the party has lost any sense of legitimacy imho.

and yes I've always voted Democratic in elections.
I held my nose for Al Gore (I was younger and stupid) but he was still the better candidate.
I wasn't as educated in politics as I am now, so I believed a lot of the BS hype... I still preferred him over *

I've never understood the homosexual friends we have that are hardcore Catholics (being baptised, raised, and attended 13 years of Catholic school myself). A few have even made the journey to the Vatican and get outright giddy over showing you the photographs. I ask them why/how ... they hate you, they demonize you. I just don't understand. Is it some manner of self-hatred?

I'm having to endure advertisement after advertisement...I have to keep the remote by my side so I can 'mute' RobMe. I bet CA has few TV ads.

Is it Boxer's term that is up?? Or Diane's? I assume the Dem will win. I remember voting for Boxer in 1984...I think she was running for Congress for the first time. I lived in Mill Valley....Oh, those were the days and worked in the City. I was very lucky to have lived in one of the most progressive and beautiful places in the world, imho.

Now I'm back in Ohio and everything is just blah. The food, the people....but the fall trees have been pretty. And unlike most I like the snow as long as the temps stay above 20 degrees. Summer is HELL...I miss the fog then.

Gays aren't by necessity or nature liberals and can't be treated as such. A conservative gay person is not an oxymoron.

But, supporting a party that is monolithically against your very nature, being, existence and equal rights - even if that party has other policy positions you agree with - is just plain crazy.

There are plenty of black people who have some favoritism toward states rights, I'm sure. But, I can't see them voting for a candidate who's openly a KKK member because of that. Gays who vote Republican are essentially voting in favor of their own expulsion from being equals in this society - even if they are free-marketeers and government haters.
