Senate Unanimously Approves A Bill To Make Juneteenth A Public Holiday

Source: NPR

The Senate unanimously approved a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, the date commemorating the end of chattel slavery in the United States, a legal public holiday.

The holiday is celebrated on June 19 and it began in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned that they had been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation.

Then-President Abraham Lincoln had signed the proclamation outlawing slavery years earlier, but it was not until 1865 that those in bondage in Texas were freed.

The measure is expected to be approved by the Democratic-led House as well, but the timing is unclear.

I believe there’s a minimum three day period before a Bill can be brought up in the House, but Pelosi could ask unanimous consent to bypass the rules, and let the Republicans object on the record.

I thought he'd be opposed just because he's an asshole who's against everything.

I wouldn’t have been expected a Bill confirming water is wet to get a unanimous vote.
