In scary scene at Euro 2020, Eriksen collapses on the field

Source: AP

By MATTIAS KAREN

COPENHAGEN (AP) — As Christian Eriksen lay unconscious on the field, his pulse slipping away, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen quickly realized there wasn’t a second to lose.

“He was breathing, and I could feel his pulse. But suddenly that changed,” Boesen said Saturday. “And as everyone saw, we started giving him CPR.”

The next 10 minutes were among the scariest to ever unfold during a match at soccer’s European Championship. Several medics worked frenetically to give Eriksen chest compressions while his teammates choked away tears and formed a circle around the midfielder to shield the scene from public view.

And finally, the eerie silence that had descended around Parken Stadium was replaced with massive cheers.

2. Eriksen never had a positive test despite frequent testing

He plays for Inter Milan (Milan was, of course, an early epicenter of the pandemic).

If Christian Eriksen had had COVID at any point, it would have been known.

3. I think they brought him back from the dead, scary. If you get a chance watch the video

of the Finland fans chant his name Christian, then the Demark fans chant back Erickson.

When the world is human it feels so good.

I hope Mr. Eriksen will be OK; very curious to know what causes someone that young and fit to collapse.

7. My guess is some unknown heart defect. Like Hank Gathers from years ago, college BB player.

9. A frined of mine and my mom's oldest (surviving at the time) son

died in his sleep in I think it was his senior year of HS, but might have been his JR year. He was fit - and had just passed the annual athletic physical . Yes, it was a previously unknown congenital heart defect.

She had previously lost another son in a house fire. The two who are left are both still alive and doing well. They must be in their late 50's-early 60's by now. But yes. An undetected heart defect can kill at any time. Sometimes a dtected one can also, despite the best medical efforts.

10. I am curious too what was the cause of his cardiac event

I suspect WPW... (Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome)

Would not be surprised if that is what happened. And if so - he is lucky it happened where it did and he received immediate care and survived. If this was it, he will then likely have a catheter ablation soon and be able to have full recovery and many years of a healthy life.

5. A friend was watching and texted us

I was vacuuming my car. So glad he’s okay or at least they have him doing better.

8. My whole family was watching, horrified and transfixed

When I saw them start the chest compressions, I started shaking. We watched him for years on Tottenham Hotspur.

This guy was a star on three of the top teams in Europe. Just shocking. Hearing now he went into cardiac arrest on the pitch.

12. So scary. Glad he is OK.

You can always tell how serious a downed player situation is by looking at his teammates. His teammates were immediately huddled around him, calling for help, and looked devastated. Kind like the opposite of when Ronaldo does one of his flops and everyone continues to go about their business.
