There's A Stark Red-Blue Divide When It Comes To States' Vaccination Rates

Source: NPR

The key issue is that demand has dropped off. After an initial crush, the number of doses being administered daily is on a steep decline from the early April peak.

*snip*

But surveys have shown Trump supporters are the least likely to say they have been vaccinated or plan to. Remember, Trump got vaccinated before leaving the White House, but that was reported months later. Unlike other public officials who were trying to encourage people to get the shot, Trump did it in private.

*snip*

The top 22 states (including D.C.) with the highest adult vaccination rates all went to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Some of the least vaccinated states are the most pro-Trump. Trump won 17 of the 18 states with the lowest adult vaccination rates. Many of these states have high proportions of whites without college degrees.

1. I like when conservatives claim the vaccines are some nefarious liberal plot

When it's mostly liberals getting the vaccine. Are we liberals doing nefarious things to ourselves?

There may be electoral implications if it's mostly conservatives continuing to infect each other with this virus.

2. Good question. And does anyone else remember when the WV

governor was all over the news, being praised for his vaccination process? But now WV is near the bottom.

4. For WV, they had a very simple process without eligibility criteria.

So everyone who wanted it was able to get it by now. A lot of conservatives don't want it.

22. And they insist that Trump get credit for the vaccines

Which, to a certain extent, he should.
But if the vaccine is some plot to kill people, then doesnt that also mean that TRUMP is trying to kill them??

5. It can cause erectile disfunction

since it does nasty things to blood. I guess permanent heart and lung damage isn't enough, maybe permanent genital damage might motivate people.

I don't think we'll have a voter suppression issue once it does.

10. Until it affects each one individually, there won't be a sea change in vaccination rates.

It's terrible to think like this, but COVID just isn't deadly enough to cause the red states to get vaccinated.

11. A cousin told me the survival rate made not getting vaxed an acceptable risk to him.

I asked him how having six figures in hospital debt would affect his life.

13. I've had the same conversation with my son - he says there are "too many unknowns" about the shots.

Even countering with the knowns of infection seems to have no influence on him. It's sad and infuriating.

MILLIONS of people are dealing with severe problems that may prevent them from going back to work
Yes, the survival rate is very high. But do you want damaged lungs & such to prove your point?

14. So, there still isn't enough for everyone to get vaccinated?

And it's not necessarily about hesitancy. The May NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found 75% of Black adults said they had gotten a shot or would get it when one came available. That was about the same as white adults, but Black adults trailed whites when it came to those who said they'd actually received one.

I assumed there wasn't any real any problems to get these, because in my area everyone who wanted one seems to have been able to get them with minimal wait.

16. There is mistrust and misinformation with minorities too

There are historical reasons why some black Americans don't trust it. The vaccine is widely available everywhere now for those who want it.

20. I was curious so I went on CVS' website and put in random zip codes from various states

Seemed about the same levels accessibility as I am seeing where I am. Although, I didn't check smaller towns and stuff.

There is a lot of misinformation out there. Even I put off getting it even though I knew it was unreasonable of me to do that. Technically I had "good" reasons for postponing it, but I could have make it work a month earlier if I tried.

19. If every anti-vaxxer died

the country would be a much much better place.

Yeah, a tiny minority can't get vaxxed, but we'd be better off if every idiot refusing to shuffled off this mortal coil.

Good. Fucking. Riddance.

24. Fox News and Tucker Carlson are to blame.

They feed the antivaxx paranoia in order to get ratings. It's news based on the audience's biases, not information.
