Democratic Rep. Val Demings announces challenge to GOP Sen. Marco Rubio

Source: NBC

WASHINGTON — Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., made her Senate bid official Wednesday, announcing that she plans to challenge GOP Sen. Marco Rubio for his seat next year.

Demings made the announcement in a three-minute-long video in which she shared her story serving in Orlando’s police department, where she worked her way up to serving as its first female chief of police.

“When you grow up in the South poor, Black and female, you have to have faith in progress and opportunity. My father was a janitor and my mother was a maid. She said, ‘Never tire of doing good, never tire,” Demings said in the clip.

“I’ve never tired of standing up for what I believe is right," she continued. "Now I’m running for the United States Senate because of two simple words: never tire.”

2. Give 'em hell Val!!

Will she be as successful competing “State Wide” as she has been in her district? I know Florida is not a Democratic leaning state. Not saying she shouldn’t do this, just wondering about logistics.

7. Former mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew Gillum made a decent showing

in his statewide run for Florida's governorship. IMO, Demmings has a lot more going for her.

We need to run someone else this time.

20. Hold on to your horses. I was responding to poster #2 concerns

about Val's chances in a statewide election.

Gillum/Di Santis election was used as an example. I'm not advocating for a Gillum candidacy.

10. Anyone have any idea what her chances are against Rubio?

I also worry about losing a Dem seat in the House. We only have a margin of 6.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support her and would vote for her if I lived in FL. And we desperately need more seats in the Senate.

25. She probably won't win, but

she won't be a drag on down-ballot campaigns. In fact, she may boost turn-out which would help with those races.

That's the best news I've seen out of FL in a long time!

What is Rubio's support like down there? And is there a good candidate waiting in the wings for her seat?

27. 2020 presidential: Biden/Harris 5,297,045. Trump 5,668,731 (+3.3%).

2018 senate: Dem Bill Nelson 49.93%. Pub Rick Scott 50.05% (0.12%)

2016 senate: Dem Pat Murphy 44.3%. Pub Marco Rubio 52.0%

In late 2016 Hillary's coattails collapsed, and with them many races around the nation for which poll-supported projections for 2 years expected Dems to win. Rubio got 48% of the Hispanic vote, 17% of the AA.

28. Rubio's approval ratings are okay but reportedly show he's vulnerable

March 10, 2021

The first major public poll of the 2022 U.S. Senate election in Florida shows two-term Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has more support than opposition among Florida voters, but he does not have the backing of a majority.

The Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy survey released Wednesday shows 47% of Florida voters approve of Rubio’s job performance and 42% disapprove. The same poll shows 46% of Florida voters think he should be reelected in 2022, while 40% don’t.

No major Democrat had emerged to run against him, so the poll could only cite “a Democrat” as an alternative.

Go, Val!
