Vatican warns U.S bishops about rebuking Biden, other Catholic pols

Source: Politico via MSN

The head of the Vatican’s doctrine office is warning U.S. bishops to deliberate carefully and minimize divisions before proceeding with a possible plan to rebuke Roman Catholic politicians such as President Joe Biden for receiving Communion even though they support abortion rights.

Even then, Ladaria advised, the bishops should seek unanimous support within their ranks for any national policy, lest it become “a source of discord rather than unity within the episcopate and the larger church in the United States.”

— He said any new statement should not be limited to Catholic political leaders but broadened to encompass all churchgoing Catholics in regard to their worthiness to receive Communion.

— He questioned the USCCB policy identifying abortion as “the preeminent” moral issue, saying it would be misleading if any new document “were to give the impression that abortion and euthanasia alone constitute the only grave matters of Catholic moral and social teaching that demand the fullest accountability on the part of Catholics.”

Yea... I didn't think Rome was going to go for publicly denying communion.

If this is so important to the faith, the Pope can decide as he is infallible.

If the Vatican only gives advice, it is a minor/local issue.

only applies when the Pope is speaking on matters of faith. When the Pope is speaking ex cathedra on matters for Catholic doctrine, it is the teachings/belief of the Catholic Church that are infallible.

From the story it does not appear that this statement was issued by Pope Francis but rather by Cardinal Luis Ladaria not the Pope himself.

The catholic church has been having membership problems for decades now. They aren't looking too good using abortion rights as a tool to prop up white supremacists, liars and cheats. The repuglican party is the most hypocritical and corrupt group of narcissists which are a complete negative contrast to the teachings of the church and the bible. It isn't making the catholic church look good, at all. I don't know how any parishioners can vote repuglican and then pretend to worship all that is good. Oh yeah, i forgot, all is always forgiven so they can be as ungodly as they want.

Remember, originally the Republicans were WASPs, White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Catholics were 'dirty wops', not loyal Americans because of divided allegiance, and {gasp} working class.

Abortion was a very minor issue, especially compared to divorce, before the evangelicals got hold of it.

my inlaws are the only liberals for miles around their small rural town in AK, mostly catholics who've inherited their farms from their ancestors. They cling to their gods & their guns as if their lives depend on it. Considering how small their town is and the small population therein, there are more than enough catholic churches & liquor stores in it. Imagine that

It’s perfectly appropriate and consistent for a Catholic to oppose abortion and seek its end while defending a woman’s right to privacy.

The notion that ‘banning’ abortion through an act of law is the only ‘solution’ is nonsense.

That one supports a woman’s right to privacy does not mean he approves of abortion.

relationship with the Pope. That contrasted with the obvious mutual admiration between him and President Obama ... and both Biden and Kerry, who were prominent Catholics in Obama's administration.

Nor does it say abortion is okay. It simply is not directly mentioned at all. Christians of all stripes make up their own interpretations from the Bible to support whatever belief they want. Adultery is directly mentioned as a grave sin, yet Christians practice it all the time. Lying is portrayed as an abomination in many Bible verses, yet Christians lie a lot (especially the DJT cult).

So if Catholic bishops want to prevent Biden from getting Communion just for supporting another person’s legal right, they should also announce that those who lie (like Bill Barr, Brett Kavanaugh, Steve Scalise, Marco Rubio, Devin Nunes, Paul Gosar) to the public will not receive Communion because the Bible definitely calls lying an abomination.

Christians conveniently ignore that ancient texts included herbal recipes for ways to abort a fetus. Most likely, the men writing the various parts of the Bible knew of the existence and use of such herbs because women were considered as their property. Perhaps they did not consider abortion important enough to include in the Bible. The Torah mentions life beginning at the first breath outside the womb, and most Jews accept the right to abortion.

The Quran also does not address abortion, but Islamists believe it is permissible only up to 120 days. It is evangelical Christians who have turned abortion into a battle, not because their Bible prohibits it but because they want women to be viewed as property again and to have no right to make their own choices.

In fact, they seem to do exactly the opposite. The don't help the poor, they lie, and they hate their neighbor.

It's really ironic that they call themselves Christians. Jesus condemned hypocrites like them.

My understanding is that it is something proclaimed in the modern era, and was not part of the basic teachings of the church for most of its history.

... and form their own Church of the Damned.

It's absurd how these Catholics make alliances with right wing evangelicals knowing full well the evangelicals despise them.

I suppose they are all united in their hypocrisies and hatreds.

The Catholic Church in the U.S.A. is fractured along the same lines as U.S. politics. Liberal priests are assigned to liberal parishes, right wing priests are assigned to right wing parishes.

That phrase makes me sick. What happened to "judge not, lest ye be judged"? If you believe in Christianity, you believe all of us are sinful, and the way to erase sin is communion. How freaking cruel could you be to deny someone communion?

They may think the Pope is infallible, but the freaking bishops sure aren't.

Edited to add: Can't they find something better to worry about?
