U.S. Navy ship fires warning shots after Iranian boats come close

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots near three Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps boats in the Persian Gulf after the vessels approached at close range and ignored repeated appeals to pull back, the Navy said Tuesday.

It was the second tense encounter at sea in less than a month, after about a year of no such incidents, and it coincided with high-stakes negotiations between Iran and world powers over its nuclear program.

The three armed Iranian speed boats “rapidly approached” a U.S. Navy patrol coastal ship, the Firebolt, and a U.S. Coast Guard vessel, the Baranoff, on Monday evening in international waters at about 8 p.m. local time, the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet in Bahrain said in a statement.

The Iranian vessels operated at “an unnecessarily close range with unknown intent” and at one point came within 68 yards of both U.S. ships, the statement said.

1. What's the value here for us?

Take the $450BB annual taxpayer investment in our US Navy providing the muscle to get Saudi product to market and reimagine...... An annual $450BB used in developing a sustainable and independent energy plan that should be labor intensive and decentralized. Lets get it done. Privatize Saudi/Iranian security costs. Pass that on to the US consumer and that will accelerate our move to electric transportation.

3. At this point in history,

freedom of the seas in the Persian Gulf is vitally important to international peace and security.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard comes out into international waters from time to time to harass international shipping to test international resolve to protect freedom of the seas. IRG vessels buzzing US warships is a particularly aggressive form of this activity.

So far, it is a kabuki dance with every step well scripted. The IRG vessels come out and buzz the USN vessels. The USN vessels put a couple rounds across the bow of the IRG vessels and they back off. The tricky point will be when the IRG vessels ignore the rules and don't back off. When that happens, I would expect the IRG vessel to be reduced to a mass of flotsam.

I hope for the day when oil will lose its importance and the Persian Gulf becomes an irrelevant back water. However, this is not that day.

5. As of today, oil is essential to the world economy.

Even if the Persian Gulf someday becomes a forgotten back water, it will be necessary to send a task force through from time to time in a freedom of the seas operation. So long as maritime traffic is an important part of the world economy, the world's major navies will be needed to maintain shipping lanes against pirates - both individuals and nations.

9. Information from the Barenhof ...

Info on the Firebolt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Firebolt

On 24 April 2004, Firebolt's rigid-hulled inflatable boat attempted a boarding operation on a dhow that was approaching the Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal in Iraq. As the boarding team of seven pulled alongside, the dhow exploded in an apparent suicide bombing. Two sailors—Petty Officer First Class Michael J. Pernaselli, 27, and Petty Officer Second Class Christopher E. Watts, 28, and one Coast Guardsman, Petty Officer Third Class Nathan Bruckenthal, 24—[5] were killed when the explosion flipped the boat over, dumping her crew into the water. Bruckenthal, a member of the embarked Law Enforcement Detachment, was the first Coast Guardsman to die in action since the Vietnam War. The survivors were picked up by an S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter from the Australian frigate HMAS Stuart.[6]

On 26 April 2021, Firebolt, in formation with USCGC Baranof (WPB 1318), fired warning shots at several Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) fast inshore attack craft (FIAC) after the smaller boats closed to within 68 yards despite warnings via radio and loud-hailer. The U.S. ships were performing routine maritime security patrols in the international waters of the North Persian Gulf. [7]
