Chief: Officer may have meant to use Taser, not firearm, on Daunte Wright

Source: Star-Tribune

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said Monday that he suspects the officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright during a traffic stop Sunday did so by accident.

"It is my belief that the officer had their intention to deploy the Taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet," the chief said during a news conference Monday, adding that he believes this was an "accidental discharge."

Gannon based his remarks on video taken from an officer's body camera. On Monday afternoon, he released roughly one-minute of footage from that body camera.

The video shows three officers approaching a white sedan that is parked on the shoulder of a road. One officer approaches the driver's side window, while another approaches the passenger side. The officer on the driver's side opens the door and a man, later identified as Wright, gets out of the car. Wright's hands are then shown behind his back, and an officer pulls out handcuffs.

And on the other hand, without a gun, they can't get none

Correction: Only this hand belongs to the cop who shot the kid in Minneapolis. Very sorry.

Wrong images, they refer to the cop who "thought" she was entering her own apartment and shot the cop who lived below her apartment until he suddenly didn't.

She's the Houston cop who shot a man in his own apartment.

53. Here's an authentic photo of the officer, Kim Potter:

Who is Kimberly Potter, the cop involved in the Daunte Wright deadly shooting
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said earlier that she had been placed on administrative leave.

By Bradford Betz | Fox News

The Minnesota cop charged with shooting and killing a 20-year-old Black man during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon has been identified.

The officer is Kimberly A. Potter, whose career with the Brooklyn Center Police Department has spanned more than 25 years, the Star Tribune reported.

Potter, 48, is accused of fatally shooting Daunte Wright. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as "an accidental discharge," and said she had meant to fire a Taser, not a handgun.

"I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!" the officer is heard shouting on her bodycam footage released at a news conference. She draws her weapon after the man breaks free from police outside his car and gets back behind the wheel.

After firing a single shot from her handgun, the car speeds away, and the officer is heard saying, "Holy (expletive)! I shot him."

The officer whose body camera footage was shown pulls out a gun while shouting “Taser.”

After firing the gun, the officer says, “Holy s**t, I just shot him.”

18. If it was a mistake, it's a very dangerous and deadly mistake

it's time to raise the standards of who can be allowed to have this kind of power over people. More training, education, etc. before they can be authorized to use firearms like this in police activity to prevent such accidental killings.

My first reaction was how incompetent and poorly trained, but now I'm wondering why on earth a cop would be even shooting a taser at someone in the driver's seat of a running car? And for a traffic stop?

This "excuse" isn't helping matters. It is only making things worse. Nothing about all this makes a bit of sense, at least in a rational, reasonable world.

55. Yes and it turns out she has been a cop

for 26 years and the victim's outstanding warrant was for a misdemeanor. Meanwhile, it appears there was no major threat here. The police had his ID and if he did successfully flee, they could easily track him down. Even the use of a taser would have been unnecessarily excessive.

Assuming it's not a bald-faced lie by a cop that's terrified in the middle of the Chauvin trial... if you don't know which weapon is which on your body, YOU HAVE NO REASON TO BE A COP. If you lose your head so badly at a freaking traffic stop that you don't realize you are pointing a gun, not a taser, at a human being, YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED A WEAPON.

10. God, can policing get any worst in this country? And why...

is always an unarmed Black man who gets killed in encounters with police over minor traffic stops. This twenty-year-old had his life snuffed out by a poorly trained cop over an expired tag. I watched the press conference and it came out that because of the pandemic the local DMV there has a months-long backlog to get licenses updated. Yet they pulled this get over and were cuffing him to take him to jail over this.

Again, can policing get any worse? And training...the cop accidentally pulled gun instead of her taser and killed the kid. Now that little city is going to have to pay out millions to his family. Poor training is causing municipalities big money.

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.205

Only the first of the five subsections reasonably applies, and the odds a prosecutor proving the officer caused a situation where the was an unreasonable risk of her drawing her gun instead of her tazer is probably about zero.

..it should remind us that we have work to do

Getting guns off the streets means getting them off the hips of almost all cops.

I understand that we'll always have a need to have some cops armed but once we make some serious progress on reducing the amount of guns in the hands of civilians we need to work on demilitarizing and disarming the vast majority of our police; like every other civilized country.

42. How? It is not possible amymore, too many guns and far too many who will kill LEO's trying to

enforce a nationwide ban. Millions will violently resist with deadly force, and out in many rural areas and smaller cities, the sheriff's and other local LEO's will never enforce it. In 2017, there were an estimated 393 million guns in the US. Around 8-10 million are produced per year, now on average, so we are likely at 420-430 million or so now.

Plus (before all that) until the SCOTUS rules the 2nd Amendment doesn't guarantee the right to bear arms, there is no basis in law to even ban them. IF Breyer doesn't retire within the next 14, 16 or so months, and if we do not pass any of the voter rights bills, there is the good chance the SCOTUS will be 6-2 RW down the road if we lose the Senate in 2022 and fail to take it back. If we lose POTUS in 2024 and also fail to take the Senate, it will be 7-2 hard RW, and if Sotomayor's chronic life-long and worsening Type-1 diabetes forces her out, then 8-1 RW. We very likely will never see a Rethug-controlled Senate ever again give a Dem POTUS even a vote on a SCOTUS nominee, even if they leave it vacant for 4,6, 8 or more years. At some point we will HAVE to massively expand the Supreme Court more than likely, just to bring it back to some sort of balance.

This is not hyperbole, unfortunately, the path to there only takes a series of wrong results, a series of very possible ones, far from long shots.

Damn cops are so twitchy they think they're in a war against American citizens.

This is what has to stop. If their judgment is so poor they escalate nuisance traffic violations like this into deadly force, they need to go, to be replaced by police who have been trained to de escalate a situation, not use it as an excuse to shoot first.

I'm sure the cops will go through some remedial training so they know if they're using a taser or a gun. (sheesh!)
