Bill would protect removing or renaming monuments unless first approved by state’s historic preservation center

Nearly 158-years after its founding West Virginia – a state forged from the fires of America’s civil war – remains stuck between north and south. Now lawmakers are considering a bill that would protect Confederate monuments from removal or renaming. Supporters claim they are protecting everyone’s history. Opponents call the bill “traumatic and mentally exhausting”.

At a moment of national reckoning on race, the debate is fierce. “We were the Union. West Virginia was born out of seceding from Virginia, if i’m not mistaken,” said Delegate Sean Hornbuckle, one of the state’s few Black lawmakers. “We’re advocating for people who wanted to kill us.

The bill being considered by West Virginia’s Republican-controlled legislature would criminalize the removal of Confederate statues unless that removal is first approved by the state’s historic preservation office.

Last year some 168 Confederate symbols were removed in cities and states across the US according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the majority after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

West Virginia delegate donates kidney to ailing sister

Posted: Jan 13, 2020 / 10:29 AM EST / Updated: Jan 13, 2020 / 01:43 PM EST

A West Virginia delegate had a good excuse for missing the recent start of the legislative session he was recuperating from surgery after donating a kidney to his sister.

Cabell County Democrat Sean Hornbuckle told The Herald-Dispatch that he planned to return to Charleston this week.

Hornbuckle was told by doctors to stay in bed last week as he recovers from the surgery in which he donated a kidney to his sister, Kara Hornbuckle.

He said his sister was diagnosed with diabetes at an early age and had been on kidney dialysis for more than two years.

1. Hmm...

... something's weird in West Virginia. The "state's Historic Preservation Center" should be the place where removed statues go to be historically preserved, I think... they shouldn't be deciding what to remove, rename or destroy.

... and happy recovery to Sean Hornbuckle and his sister!

2. Good friend of mine who lived in Maryland...

He said there was a saying in Maryland, "West Virginia stupid."
(He moved to Georgia about 4 years ago.)

I don't know myself, guys in Minnesota and Michigan like calling us here in Wisconsin, "Cheeseheads."

3. West Virginia was a Union State

It broke away from the State of Virginia early in the war and was granted statehood on its own.

I don't know how many confederate monuments there are in the state to begin with or when they were erected. As a reference, the Union soldiers who started what would become the Gettysburg national park forbid Confederate monuments from being erected on any part of the battlefield. Union soldiers who fought at Gettysburg formed their own organization to preserve the battlefield and met annually for decades. It was only after most members were too old (and too few) to maintain the park they had created that it was turned over to the US park service to maintain. Most of the Confederate monuments on the battlefield today were constructed and placed after the park service took over. Most Union soldiers would never have dreamed of erecting anything to commemorate or glorify Confederate participants in that battle.

12. Well, I live here and there's a state park...

named after Stonewall Jackson. Soooo, there’s that. I live in a pale blue dot in a sea of madness, and I see confederate flags on the regular. I have no clue how many monuments there are in WV, but I imagine there’s a few.

4. Two West Virginia ancestors, brothers

served in the Union Army and were imprisoned in Richmond's notorious Libby Prison after capture in a conflict in Va.

When released the boys walked home to return to WV.

5. Confederate statues and monuments glorify people who fought and died for 2 things:

1) The right for human beings to be held as slaves because of the color of their skin.

2) The violent destruction of the United States of America by armed seditious traitors many of whom
thought they were doing God's will.

8. per criminalization

for removing Confederate-TRAITOR statues. The Civil War between the blue and the grey goes on and on. And because of the racist POS potus 45, it has started getting warmer again. Both in rhetoric coupled with RW violence and politics from the anti-democracy forces now still kissing trumps rancid ass.

These stupid RW white supremacy skirmishes are now the freed elephant from the china shop. Once 1/6/2021 transpired these RW suckers, slavishly seeking trumps favour with their intention of ridding this country of all POC, did let decent people know they are going to hold on to their pro-slavery racist, bigoted and violent 'ideals' and they don't give a damn about consequence...

And as a mixed-race human being, I don't give a damn about their dangerous racist asses. They can all drop dead. Sick of these ignorant, ignorant sheep following trump's four years of destruction and dismantling of this/our experiment in our democracy that started in 1776. A long way from only land-owning white men voting with their 3/4 human beings held in forced bondage...

9. The state that seceded from the Confederacy...

... wants to honor the Confederacy. Sure, that makes sense.

So, when do they plan to join Virginia again?

Republicans in total control. The next years will be a disaster for The Mountain State, thanks to pervasive right-wing propaganda and an uneducated, gullible populace.

15. Want to put up Confederate memorials, West Virginia?

Cancel your own statehood. It's based on the premise of defeating those Confederates.

17. Locking

A state bill only now under consideration would be better in GD since it isn’t high level important national news as required for LBN. Thanks.
