Deal Reached to Fast-Track Legalizing Marijuana in New York

Source: Bloomberg

New York is ready to legalize recreational marijuana. The state would impose special pot taxes and prepare to license dispensaries under an agreement reached by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders.

It is my understanding that the three-way agreement has been reached and that bill drafting is in the process of finishing a bill that we all have said we support, state Senate Finance Committee Chair Liz Krueger told Bloomberg Government on Wednesday.

Cannabis use would become legal for adults 21 years old and up.

The deal that legislative leaders brokered with Cuomo (D) calls for a 13% sales tax, 9% of which would go to the state and 4% to the localities, Krueger said. Distributors additionally would collect an excise tax of as much as 3 cents per milligram of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, with a sliding scale based on the type of product and its potency.

4. This needs to be done on the Federal level, now!

Until marijuana is legalized, or at the very least decriminalized, on the federal level, people who actually need the benefits of marijuana can't use it. I go to a Pain and Symptom Management Clinic and can't even touch marijuana for it's medicinal benefits. It's still classified as a schedule one drug, right along with heroin. I've had to undergo urinalysis every two months for 17 years so they can make sure I don't take too much methadone, which they prescribe for pain, or take any "street" drugs.
So every pot-head can merrily puff away to their heart's content, but people who could actually benefit from the medicinal properties of marijuana are shit out of luck. I'm sick and tired of writing to my Senators, Congress-critters, newspapers etc. trying to address this miscarriage of justice, but there aren't enough of we people in the same boat to matter. We remain..........fucked.

6. Absolutely correct!

My state has medical marijuana. But, my company frequently reminds us that no matter if your dr approves, it's company policy you will be terminated if marijuanas is detected in a random drug screen. Congress needs to act on this.

12. I dug a little deeper on the draft...

It appears that the homegrow provision will be enacted 18 months following retail operations; so its a ways off I suppose.

13. OK, I can wait.

Thanks for checking.

The local farmer were growing hemp last year. My guess is they will be switching crops to something with a higher potential.
