Biden signing voting rights order today for anniversary of Selma's 1965 'Bloody Sunday' march

By Sarah Whites-Koditschek | [email protected]

President Joe Biden this morning is delivering taped remarks at a breakfast on Sunday commemorating the 1965 March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. Biden is also signing an executive order aimed at expanding voting rights access.

Biden will speak virtually at this year’s Martin and Coretta King Unity Breakfast. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a drive-in breakfast in the parking lot of Wallace Community College.

“Today, on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, I am signing an executive order to make it easier for eligible voters to register to vote and to improve access to voting,” Biden said in his remarks prepared for the breakfast.

Biden’s order will require federal agencies to increase access to information about voting and to help states with voter registration. The order also calls for increased voting access for federal employees, service members, inmates, and people with disabilities.

UPDATE

Biden marks ‘Bloody Sunday’ by signing voting rights order

Politics Mar 7, 2021 12:16 PM EST

WASHINGTON — A new executive order from President Joe Biden directs federal agencies to take a series of steps to promote voting access, a move that comes as congressional Democrats press for a sweeping voting and elections bill to counter efforts to restrict voting access.

His plan was announced during a recorded address on the 56th commemoration of “Bloody Sunday,” the 1965 incident in which some 600 civil rights activists were viciously beaten by state troopers as they tried to march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama.

“Every eligible voter should be able to vote and have it counted,” Biden said in his remarks to Sunday’s Martin and Coretta King Unity Breakfast before signing the order. “If you have the best ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote.”

Biden’s order includes several modest provisions. It directs federal agencies to expand access to voter registration and election information, calls on the heads of agencies to come up with plans to give federal employees time off to vote or volunteer as nonpartisan poll workers, and pushes an overhaul of the government’s Vote.gov website.

6. voting rights

Maybe it's time democratic-controlled states' elections start making it harder for rural areas to vote. Let them drive
two hours to their new polling place. Or cut their hours to cast their ballots so that they have to endure long lines.

7. Democrats are all about making voting more accessible

NOT about making it harder for anyone to vote. Welcome to DU!

9. Excellent. Now if Dems can get it past the Exec Order stage & renew the Voting Rights Act...

...that was gutted by SCOTUS a few years ago, so much the better.

When one reads of the dozens if not hundreds of voter suppression laws coming up in the states all over the continent, one thing is clear: the Confederacy is still alive, resuscitated by Trumpistas, and these bastards will go down fighting tooth and claw, if they go down at all.
