Democrats' $1.9 trillion relief plan stalls in Senate amid impasse over unemployment aid

Source: CNBC

Senate Democrats have agreed to cut the weekly unemployment insurance supplement in their $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill but extend it for a longer period of time.

However, reports indicated Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was reluctant to back the policy, which threw the chamber into chaos Friday and delayed his party’s efforts to pass the legislation. The first in a long series of votes — a failed effort by independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont to include a $15 per hour minimum wage — was still ongoing after six hours as senators decided how to proceed.

Manchin was reportedly considering supporting a plan from Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio. The GOP lawmaker’s amendment would set a $300 per week unemployment supplement through July 18 — a shorter duration than Democrats seek.

Democrats aim to make their change to unemployment programs Friday during a marathon of votes on amendments known as a vote-a-rama. Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., was set to propose the plan.

26. Manchin is the real problem, I am convinced he is a republican faking to be a Democrat

That SOB is always on the side of republicans. Don't tell me that it is because he is in a red state, BS. You have to have the guts to explain to your constituents why the measures proposed by Democrats are important, I don't think any of his constituents who are struggling would reject them. FK him! I am so tired of that guy.

25. How is Manchin serving his constituents by cutting the size and length of the unemployment

benefit supplement? Or does he really give a fuck? After all, we know that the people in his state are independently wealthy, and all they'll use the money for is to put fuel in their yachts.

5. Shouldn't the DNC run ads in WV

asking people to call Manchin's office to voice their support for UI benefits? Shouldn't they have done it with the minimum wage, instead of caving?

in 2022 the democrats can pickup a few Senate seats (ie., Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin) and cancel the Manchin show.

Your state is on my list. I will not spend money in your state. I can see WV from my kitchen window and I will not spend money there.

I'll shop on Amazon rather than states whose reps are stalling these necessary relief acts from passing. I've been staying home, but not going to pick travel to the states with inhuman reps blocking relief in the Senate.

To sum up: block the bills, block help to people trying to survive this r driven death penalty called Covid-19 and I'm boycotting your state.

15. Losing our DINO's is what lost us control of the House and Senate not long ago.

And Manchin votes with progressives about 60% of the time, according to Progressive Punch -- much much more than the Republican who would replace him in the deep red state of West Virginia.

A smarter thing to focus our efforts on is flipping swing state seats, like Portman's and Toomey's, both Senators who will be retiring when their terms are up.

29. He votes with us more than twice as often as Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski do.

But his state went for Trump by more than 30 points. There's no way we'd be able to replace him with another Democrat. It's a waste of our resources, and shooting ourselves in the foot if we defeat him in the primary, just so he can lose to the R in the general.

34. Why would you think we'd get anyone more progressive from WVA? But here's another link.

On Progressive Punch, based on votes important to progressives, Manchin ranked at #49th -- even though he's from a strongly Republican state. His lifetime score of voting with progressives was 62%.

(Sen. Sinema ranked at #50 and scored 52%.)

Republican Susan Collins, from a Democratic leaning state, ranked at #51, scored only 39% on voting with progressives.

... replace them with DEMOCRATS and make Manchin irrelevant.

Until then, count your blessings and just be glad that he's one of ours.

19. Is he one of ours if he sides with the GOP on the most integral economic bills

And repeatedly undermines the policy initiatives of the Democratic majority and the Biden administration?

I mean I understand the argument its a red state and a sometimes Democrat is better than a Republican, but he seems to be pushing the boundaries of that to undermine the Democratic majority with no clear explanation as to why other than a hollow appearance of centrism.

28. "I understand the argument its a red state"...No, that is not an excuse

Do you think people are going to say "I will not vote for you again because you helped pass a bill that helped me and my family"?

He has to go out and explain/convince his constituents why these bills are important to them. Like someone said before, he just votes with Democrats on minor issues, but the issues that people care about he sides with republicans. In my view, he IS a republican faking to be a Democrats.

And I agree thats why I posed the question.

But there is a valid counter-argument and that is that Chuck Schumer would not control the senate agenda and Mitch McTurtle would if the senator from red West Virginia was actually a republican.
