Antivirus software pioneer John McAfee indicted for cryptocurrency fraud - U.S. officials
Source: Reuters
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - John McAfee, the antivirus software pioneer whose former company still bears his name, has been indicted on fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges stemming from two cryptocurrency schemes, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Friday. Authorities accused McAfee and his bodyguard, Jimmy Gale Watson Jr, of exploiting McAfee's large Twitter following to artificially inflate prices of "altcoins" through a pump-and-dump scheme, and concealing payments McAfee received from startup businesses to promote initial coin offerings. McAfee and his accomplices allegedly reaped more than $13 million from the schemes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed related civil charges concerning the alleged pump-and-dump scheme. Read more: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/u-says-john-mcafee-indicted-164633603.html

2. Isn't this guy also wanted for murder...
...in Belize? Tax evasion, murder, now crypto-fraud. Where is he now? I think he needs to take a ride on Elon Musk's spaceship to Mars to avoid extradition.

9. Slight correction, from what I read he is only wanted for questioning about a murder which is not
the same thing as being wanted for the murder itself.

6. Overinflated asset prices precede market crashes
pump and dump, Ponzi, real estate prices (check out the Florida crash in the 1920s) ... here we have stocks, bitcoin in bubbles. A reckoning of some kind is coming. Every 2 bit penny stock with a book value of 13 cents and no earnings is making a run ... 3, 4 10 $15 a share. It wasn't only Gamestop.

8. Isn't that the guy who vowed to eat his own dick if Bitcoin didn't hit $1 million by 2020?
Maybe he'll finally get the mental health help he needs when he's in prison. |

10. Didn't he skip the country 20 years ago?
I read he was in Costa Rico or some place, avoiding US government and media.

11. Not sure when he left the US but he was deported from Guatemala in 2012
He also had property in Belize where he was considered a person of interest in the murder of Gregory Faull - he "fled" Belize. He illegally returned to Guatemala and was deported to the US.
He's run for President in 2016 and 2020 as a Libertarian(?!). On October 5, 2020, McAfee was arrested in Spain at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice for tax evasion. The indictment alleges he earned millions of dollars from 2014–18, but has failed to file income tax returns.[110]
On October 6, 2020, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint[111] alleging that McAfee had fraudulently promoted certain ICOs. According to the SEC, McAfee presented himself as an impartial investor when he promoted the ICOs, despite the fact that he was allegedly paid $23 million in digital assets in exchange for the promotions. On March 5, 2021, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced that they had formally indicted McAfee and an executive adviser of his, named Jimmy Gale Watson Jr, for allegedly fraudulently promoting certain ICOs and performing pump and dump schemes.[112] McAfee is currently incarcerated in Spain, pending extradition to the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McAfee#Personal_life |
