GOP AGs say House voting rights bill unconstitutional

Source: The Hill

A group of 20 Republican attorney generals are criticizing the voting rights bill approved Wednesday night in the House, writing in a letter to congressional leaders that H.R. 1 would "impose burdensome costs and regulations on state and local officials."

The attorneys general, lead by Indiana's Todd Rokita (R), said in the letter that the bill "betrays several Constitutional deficiencies and alarming mandates that, if passed, would federalize state elections and impose burdensome costs and regulations on state and local officials."

"The Act would invert that constitutional structure, commandeer state resources, confuse and muddle elections procedures, and erode faith in our elections and systems of governance. Accordingly, Members of Congress may wish to consider the Act's constitutional vulnerabilities as well as the policy critiques of state officials," the letter read.

The House passed H.R. 1 on Wednesday in a party-line vote, with no Republicans supporting the measure.

1. And all the horrendous voting regs they

are passing would not impose burdensome costs and regulations on state and local officials to implement?

2. GOP AGs?

Same Republican AGs who spurred the insurrection on?

Same Republican AG Association members "trying desperately to distance itself from the attempted coup by white supremacists and Trump supporters on Jan. 6, but it cannot hide from the fact that its actions helped fuel the violence that left at least five dead, many more injured, and the Capitol badly damaged."

RAGA's “March to Save America” coalition helped organized the Jan. 6 rally in D.C.

Its former chair, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, spoke at the rally alongside President Trump. And its dark money partner, the Rule of Law Defense Fund (RLDF), ran robocalls ahead of time explicitly urging protesters to march on the U.S. Capitol.

GOP AGs can STFU

3. Bullshit. So sorry you can't win free and fair elections. Not the people's problem, Stalin.

Federal elections should be run by the feds, IMO.

4. It's the last stop until the end of free elections as far as they know

I say “know” because the RW airwaves are filled with talk of how this is the end. Dems will never lose another election ever.

Completely opposite of the truth of course.

5. The cost is what they object to? Odd

Today online the R wingers who have commented have been claiming they are against it because "there will be NO ID requirements at all, anyone can vote as many times as they want". About 1/2 those commenting followed it up with some ridiculous BS about owning property or proving you make more than 100K a year as a qualification to vote.
Living in the deep red state of OK, the land that time forgot and who purged me just before the 2016 election, in 2020 as I fed my ballot into the machine, I thought "This may very well be the last time I am allowed to vote".
BTW OK was in the news yesterday because our state house has introduced a bill which would allow them to choose which of Bidens EOs they will follow -

6. They can afford it

It's called the TAX Scam act of 2017. They lifted the SALT cap on Blue State homeowners and forced us to pay property taxes twice -

Once in our hometown (valid and put to good use)

Once in a transfer of wealth to red states.

Now for the past two years we've sent $9703 to them that would have gone into a savings or spending in our community -

What the fuck did they do with my money?

8. State AGs don't have much say on the matter

(Though they would be the ones bringing any lawsuits)

Unfortunately, the nine who DO have a say likely agree with them.

11. I think...

... these GOPs are going to have to get another career... telling "The Hill" something is not constitutional does not make it unconstitutional. Didn't they also say the impeachment trial was not constitutional? Maybe they should read the document... looking at those trying to stop Biden's confirmation would provide them with some real crooks.

15. Of course they do.

The second impeachment trial was unconstitutional as well, according to them. It's their new mantra. They have no other arguments, so they go the "unconstitutional" route. SMDH

Hey, dudes, here's how you "erode faith in our elections and systems of governance:" Call a fair election fraudulent, excuse your ex-president for inciting an insurrection while he was still president, perpetuate the big lie, etc. You know because you've read the playbook.

What erodes my faith in our system of governance is having the current brand of republicans in any position of power. That alone gives me nightmares like I never had before.

19. GQP AGs believe that any vote for a Democrat is unconstitutional.

Only votes for Republicans are constitutional. Republicans in every GQP state are busily planning how to steal every seat they can in 2022 because it might not be so popular everywhere to run as a QAnon candidate who believes in Jewish space lasers and violent overthrow of the US government.

and the GOP has managed to violate every single one with impunity.

22. And if the legislation was written for just federal elections? (Presidential and Congressional)

I think they wouldn't have a leg to stand on as far as constitutionality.

Then they would have to determine if they will have separate voter registration and eligibility requirements, different election polling places, early voting dates, different deadlines.
