McConnell to Fight Stimulus Bill 'In Every Way' as Biden Urges Senate Dems to Get it Done Now
Source: MSN
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed that Republicans will fight the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill "in every way we can" as President Joe Biden urged Senate Democrats to stick together and pass the package quickly.
McConnell called the sprawling package "wildly expensive" and warned that Republicans will oppose the bill "in every way that we can" in a Tuesday press briefing. "It is my hope that at the end, Senate Republicans will unanimously oppose it just like House Republicans did," he said.
Meanwhile, Biden aggressively pushed Senate Democrats to unify and rally around the package in a virtual conference call. Some moderates in the party such as Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia have publicly opposed some provisions of the bill for being too costly, but Biden urged all members to get it passed fast, even if they don't accept the full package.
After the call, Senator Tim Kaine reiterated the message from Biden to reporters as: "This is really important. Democrats stick together. Let's get this done."

Of course, will Republicans be held accountable for the $2.3 trillion tax cut that they approved even when the economy was already strong, which mostly benefitted the rich? Nonetheless, by embracing racism, Republicans might even be able to get the white working class to oppose the benefits that would help them and support huge tax cuts to the top 1 percent. All Republicans need to do is blame a minority woman (Kamala Harris or Tammy Duckworth or AOC) and that might be enough to mollify their base.

Between new cost estimates and the White Houses own budget numbers, the wheels are coming off Republican claims that President Donald Trumps tax cuts will pay for themselves by generating increased growth and government revenues over the next decade.
Not only will this tax plan pay for itself but it will pay down debt, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin famously boasted in September. But his own departments analysts now peg the 10-year cost at $2.3 trillion given the administrations assumption that tax breaks for individuals and large estates will be extended past 2025.
POLITICOs own calculations, working entirely from data in the 2018 and 2019 budgets, indicate that the added revenues generated by the tax cuts themselves would fall substantially short of matching $2.3 trillion.
For the years 2018 to 2027, the shortfall ranges from $1 trillion to $1.3 trillion. In measuring for 2019 to 2028, the picture improves, but the 10-year shortfall still is between $700 billion to $1.1 trillion.

(73 posts)they win back the House and Senate in 2022, with the Biden Presidency wounded. If Biden succeeds in getting this bill passed, the GQP losses big time.....Do we fight like hell, or let GQP squash this....

(9,958 posts)Both the Republican governor of WV and voters support this bill. The governor even said on national news that Biden should go big. So why is Manchin against it? It offends him for poor people in his state and small businesses to get help?

(13,579 posts)Biden better steamroll everything because his agenda has enormous support of both democratic and republican voters. That's your "unity" right there. "Bipartisan" in the designed-for-minority-rule senate and gerrymandered house is not the same as real "bipartisan" in the population at large. Joe should hammer that distinction. His agenda has huge and verifiable bipartisan support "in the country."

(9,054 posts)of all to the GOP. That is why they leave messes behind and try to thwart the advances of curtailing covid by opening up their states.
They are trying to make a mess to use against the Democrats and Biden. They don't want people to get financial help now because people may remember.
If the filibuster is not ended and Democrats do not have any other options they should override the Parliamentarian to pass the minimum wage increase.
Democrats MUST deliver relief that people will actually benefit from in real time, not years from now if we are no longer in the majority.
Manchin should know this and set aside grievances.... as should Sinema.

(13,916 posts)We would play some real hardball
We get 75 votes in the senate, the bill passes as is
We get less than 70 votes in the senate, We add $15 minimum
we get less than 65, we make the stimulus $3000.
We get less than 60, we make it $20 minimum.
We get 50+VP, then we repeal Literally all the tax cuts trump gave to anyone making over 500k per year

We would not need this stimulus bill if Trump had not been such a huge fuck up. Just like
Obama had to have a stimulus bill to overcome the bush/Cheney economic crash and
McConnell fought that one too hoping that if people were hurting they would vote Obama
out in 2012.

This GQP is the enemy of the people and of democracy itself. They only cooperate in anything when they can subvert or tweak the system to give themselves more money!

(17,382 posts)Blaming Manchin and Sinema for McConnell is just ridiculous. If it were not for them, Republicans would be holding up all of Biden's cabinet nominees. Also, even progressives like Bernie were holding up Tanden's nomination.
It is just odd how even in an OP about McConnell, people still manage to trash Democrats on DU.

(17,382 posts)...for the outage in Texas when we get these spammed attacks on Democrats in a fit of whataboutism that would make Fox News proud.
Why try to defend Republicans like McConnell through attacks on Democrats?

(3,376 posts)In any way. He is an evil bastard who I hope rots in hell. And that is why I am mad that we have 2 Democrats who are helping him.

(17,382 posts)whataboutism - the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counteraccusation or raising a different issue.
It is one thing if the OP was thread about Manchin, but instead rather than address the accusation or question, you blame Manchin, a Democrat, for McConnell's conduct. Or, you are drawing a false equivalency between Manchin and McConnell.
I understand that there are going to social media operations that are going to hijack every thread and make it about attacking Democrats that appear vulnerable by attacking such Democrats from the "left" by making false allegations that Manchin is getting bribed.
McConnell is a special kind of evil who has repeatedly shown a willingness to endanger Americans, undermine Democracy, or plunge the country into recession in order to secure power. I think most Democrats will understand the unique danger posed by modern Republicans and will see through efforts to divide Democrats.
Evergreen Emerald
(13,069 posts)That is the problem here.
There will not be bipartisan action because in order for the Republicans to stay in power, the Dems cannot succeed. So, at every turn, with every issue, the Republicans will not allow anything that resembles a democratic win. Even if it hurts Americans.
The Republicans did not seek office to govern. They want power, control, and money.

(13,906 posts)is that the income cap of $75,000 is lowered to $50,000 for the full $1400. Realistically, Manchin may insist on it. It would be horrible politics but it might be the only way the bill passes with his support.

TomCADem
(17,382 posts)That is a strong accusation. Also, doesn't that deserve its own thread or are you going to trash and slander Democrats even on OPs regarding McConnell. The OP has nothing to do with Manchin and Republicans would love to avoid responsibility by having people give them a free pass on their votes against the COVID relief package.
