Rick Scott: GOP is 'voters' party,' not Trump's
Source: Politico
Sen. Rick Scott on Sunday declined to call the GOP the party of former President Donald Trump and acknowledged President Joe Biden was “absolutely” the legitimate winner of the 2020 White House race.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Scott (R-Fla.) — the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee — reiterated his message that “the Republican civil war is canceled.” But Scott’s remarks to host Chris Wallace also underscored the tense intraparty disputes he is navigating as he leads the GOP effort to retake the Senate in the 2022 midterm elections. Asked by Wallace whether the Republican Party is “still Donald Trump’s party,” Scott replied that the GOP is “the voters’ party” and “always has been.” Read more: https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/28/rick-scott-republican-civil-war-canceled-471855

2. He'd have a stronger point if Trump wasn't the high water mark for Republican voter turn out
They seem to do best the more fascist they get. I don't like what that says about this country. We need to do better. But the Trump presidency for some voters may be like the shark that, once it's tasted human blood, won't settle for seal meat anymore.

3. testing my hypothesis
Going back 30 years... other than that one time the Republicans had two warns running on election day, Trump is their best performing candidate. Keep in mind that after four years of openly racist, fascist, dishonest government and in the middle of performing worse than every other country in the world on the pandemic by force of his sheer incompetence, Trump actually improved over his 2016 percentage by 2.8 points.
We've got a problem, folks. 2020 - 48.9% ... ![]() 2016 - 46.1 2012 - 47.2 2008 - 45.7 2004 - 50.7 ... only time this century the GOP won a majority 2000 - 47.9 1996 - 40.7 (45% of non Perot votes) 1992 - 37.5 (46% of non Perot votes) |

8. GOP is money and power party and power is derived from money
That's why they worship a billionaire in office, why all other nominees became irrelevant. Money is the only consideration. It it totally about money and their private property rights. Bedrock.

16. Yes, but how strongly? Only 55% in CPAC's straw poll voted for Trump?!
They even packed the poll by running Trump and DeSantis (a courtesy to FL's governor) with a bunch of people who angered the attendees by "betraying" Trump or refusing to be there. Hang-Pence got 1%.
And in a poll that simply asked if they wanted Trump to run in 2024, only 68% gave the great man the loyal courtesy of a check by his name. Not saying Scott's right. Trump's "voters" would support a coup today making him their dictator. But he can't pull that off, and, if this ultraloyal crowd is any indication, guessing more than half would ditch their old dud just as fast for a new strongman. ![]() |

11. Just who does he think he's kidding?
Even their voters know who owns that party and it's not them, nor will it ever be.
They're follow the leader types and they're cool with that. He's not going to convince anyone else. |
