WNBA Team Co-Owned By Ex-Sen. Kelly Loeffler Is Sold After Players' Criticism

Source: NPR

The WNBA franchise the Atlanta Dream, which had been co-owned by former U.S. Sen. Kelley Loeffler of Georgia, has been sold, the league announced Friday afternoon.

The three-member investor group which purchased the team includes former Dream player Renee Montgomery, making her the first retired player to become both an owner and a WNBA executive.

The other owners are Larry Gottesdiener and Suzanne Abair, two executives from the Massachusetts-based real estate firm Northland Investment Corp.

"With the unanimous WNBA and NBA [board] votes, today marks a new beginning for the Atlanta Dream organization and we are very pleased to welcome Larry Gottesdiener and Suzanne Abair to the WNBA," Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement.

1. Excellent news! Renee Montgomery played for the Atlanta Dream and retired this year. Very happy

to read that she will be one of the owners.

BTW, Renee Montgomery is a big political advocate and worked as part of LeBron James team to setup locations (e.g., basketball arenas) for people to vote. Nicole Wallace had Renee Montgomery on her show many times during the lead up to Nov 3rd 2020 election.

2. Her Partners Appointed Her Governor

Heard it on ESPN radio.
She will be an exec involved in day to day operations of the team. But, she's also the team's rep on the WNBA Board of Governors.
If I heard it correctly, she'll he only the 2nd women to be currently seated on any major sports' BoG. (I'm guessing Jeannie Buss is the other one.)

3. Kim Pegula is President and CEO of the NFL Bills and NHL Sabres.

She’s not in a class by herself but it sure doesn’t take long to call the roll.

8. Thanks. I Didn't Know That

Apparently someone at ESPN radio didn't either, as I repeated what I heard.
Great catch!

4. Wow, great news on the Board of Governors - it's well deserved as she's very smart and of course

has that domain expertise of having been basketball player at all levels - high school, college, pros.

6. Reading that LeBron James helped make this happen by putting Renee Montgomery in touch

with folks who could seal the deal.

7. Unanimous Votes

Kind of like the sale of the Clippers
I wonder which vote went quicker, this one or the Clips?
