U.S. Says 'Ball in Iran's Court' as Nuclear Deal Hangs by Thread

Source: Bloomberg

A standoff between Iran and the U.S. deepened on Sunday over reviving the nuclear deal, days before the Islamic Republic is set to curb international inspections of its atomic activities.

Iran repeated that it won’t discuss the beleaguered accord with the Biden administration until Washington officially rejoins as a participant and lifts Trump-era sanctions on Iran’s economy.

“Once everybody implements their parts of the obligation there will be talks, and those talks will not be about changing the terms of the agreement, regional issues or missile issues. We’re not going to discuss those,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in an interview with state-run Press TV.

Any negotiations with the U.S. would have to address the need for a guarantee that Washington won’t quit the deal again, Zarif added. President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the accord that aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

1. "a guarantee that Washington won't quit the deal again" lol

Even if they are proved to be secretly still working on building nuke's? I bet they would like that...and you'd have to be pretty stupid to agree to that.

2. Iran needs the bomb.

How could any of us expect Iran to not develop the bomb? Given our history of aggression, back-stabbing and saber rattling in the region, only an utter fool would disarm. How close did we come to Trump starting a war with them? How many GOP idiots still think it would be a great idea?

Iran needs the bomb as a deterrent; same as we do.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but you'll pardon me if I don't hold my breath.

3. Actually the wanting to built a bomb is what is most likely to GET Iran bombed..

...by the US or Israel.
Lots of countries don't have a nuke program and are in no danger from the US.

4. Iran

Iran has been uniquely targeted by the GOP as our next target. Who can forget McCain singing "bomb bomb Iran" .. and it's not gotten any better (within the GOP ranks) since then.

And I might like to point out, that pre-emptive attacks because someone scares you is still a war-crime. It doesn't matter if it's Israel bombing Iran or the US attacking Iraq. What's sad is that there have been no consequences for us essentially being a rogue-state.

5. Iran will have brought it on their selves if Israel bombs their nuclear production facilities.

Years of vowing to destroy Israel makes Israel understandably not wanting them to have the bomb.

And no country puts their civilian nuclear research facilities under mountains, very obviously a bomb program.

Iran would be under no danger of anyone wanting to bomb them if they would stop funding their various terrorist groups and civil wars in multiple countries and stop with the attempt to built the bomb.

6. US vs. USSR

So we should have bombed the USSR since they were developing military atomic power? And China? Condi Rice wrote once that we should have done a first-strike against the USSR while they were still weak.

I'm still waiting for Bush (et al) to apologize to the hundreds of thousands dead when we invaded looking for those WMD's in Iraq.

Iran's behavior has not be laudable, but we need to discard the policies of attacking those that make us afraid and work on disarmament through trust and not belligerence.

So far we have proven (over and over again) to be untrustworthy.

7. Letting a theocracy dictatorship have the bomb is a bad idea.

USSR & China were both more pragmatic then the Mullahs.

10. Pence

Yes, the world would be a much better place without theocracies with the bomb. I'm more than a little worried that some Christian cultist, rapture/end-of-world fanatic, could get elected here and decide the time had come for the rapture.

Maybe not Pence, but are we secure from this happening in the next exchange of power? The biggest reason we're not living in a theocratic dictatorship now is that Trump really is stupid and not just insane.

9. I'm no fan of Iran

Holding every country accountable for the mistreatment of its citizens should be a mandate for us all. And that includes holding the US accountable for our crimes.

Oh yeah, bummer that we're not a member of the International Criminal Court and (under Bush) officially considered the Geneva Conventions "quaint."

Is the new rule that only nice guys get to have atomic weapons? Then we should attack China, their treatment of the Uighur is horrific. And Russia, their annexation of Crimea, killing of Putin's critics and interference in our elections was less than cool.

In the meantime, we should face up to the fact that we've made the situation in the Middle East so bad that it's a rational behavior of Iran to acquire the bomb (or other WMDs) to deter the US from attacking.

If you want to keep the Iranians from having the bomb, we have to remove their need for one.

11. They want the bomb regardless of US actions.

Much easier to bully their neighbors into what they want. Which is control of Mecca and the destruction of Israel and the predominance of Shia orthodoxy.

12. MAD

I'll respectively disagree. Having the bomb is good for Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). It's really lousy for bullying your neighbors or for expanding your borders. It's the weapon of retaliation, after you've given up hope of surviving.

Israel has the bomb. Iran would be suicidal to believe they could use it for a first strike. They need it for deterrence.

13. There are other neighbors they would like to bully besides Israel.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. They want to control Iraq, the want the Holy Places in Saudi under their control and they claim islands owned by the UAE.
They can push around their neighbors much more effectively with their threats backed by nukes instead of their poorly equipped military.
Making Saudi want to get their own nukes also will be a result.
