Social Security Beneficiaries in U.S. to Receive 1.7% Increase

Source: Bloomberg

More than 56 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 1.7 percent cost-of-living adjustment for 2013, the U.S. government said today.

The increase, which will begin in January, will be less than half the size of the 3.6 percent increase recipients received this year. Benefits are automatically adjusted each year for inflation so that recipients don’t fall behind as prices rise.

They announced the 2012 COLA on 19 Oct 2011 which was the 3rd wednesday in October. Todays announcement is the 3rd tuesday of October so they're being consistent. I'm not going to bother looking further back because I'm sure it's the same. You know Romney's going to spout off about this at some point so if it happens during the debate I hope the President has the rebuttal info at hand to slap him down with it.

Medicare Part B premiums, which cover doctor visits, are expected to rise by about $7 per month for 2013, according to government projections. Since the premiums are deducted from Social Security payments, that would eat up more than a third of the average COLA.

The Part B premium is currently $99.90 a month for most seniors. Medicare is expected to announce the premium for 2013 in the coming weeks.

POSTER COMMENT: Make sure you watch the GD forum for the official announcement. The PTB in the LBN forum didn't consider this morning announcement worthy of LBN and pulled it from the sidebar.

1.7% SSA increase. What an insult to the recipients and a stab in the back.

The SSA workforce has been scammed worse by having their salaries frozen on a phony pretext of patriotism.

We Vets and Federal Employees have been sold out.

We who fought want our dignity and lost funds reinstated now.

Let the GOP take a freeze.
