GOP lawmakers dodge metal detectors added after Capitol riots, blast them as an 'atrocity'This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). When Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) on Tuesday walked through new metal detectors installed at the U.S. Capitol after the Jan. 6 riot, the machines started beeping. But Boebert, who had carried her bag with her through the magnetometers, refused to hand it over. Soon, she was in a standoff with police. The scene, first chronicled by CNN congressional reporter Ryan Nobles, was one of many tense interactions between GOP House members and Capitol police over the new security measures. Some refused to go through the detectors. Others pushed past police after setting off the devices. One legislator even took to the House floor to call the measures “an atrocity.” The complaints left Democrats fuming that Republicans were more concerned about basic security changes than investigating their party’s role in instigating the riot that necessitated the measures. “Do these people not understand that literally everyone else has to go through metal detectors to get in here?” tweeted Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.). “Average people do not get to bring guns into the United States Capitol in normal times. Get over yourselves.” The metal detector protests were the latest act of defiance by a GOP faction that supported President Trump’s attempts to overturn the election results based on false claims of mass election fraud, a baseless allegation that helped fuel the insurrection at the Capitol. 3. "an atrocity", will be when
Gohmert & friends are followed to their offices, by police with rubber surgical gloves, for a complete screening & free proctology check.

8. Do they bypass the TSA at airports also?
Make them go through the metal detectors and show whatever metal objects they are carrying. Confiscate as needed. Otherwise, they don't get in.

Isn’t this against House rules. I’d assume so if there are metal detectors. Sanctions. Fines.

23. My last drunk started the day Reagan was inaugurated.
The birth of the “Me Me Me" movement. I was 4 years old when I saw JFK wave to people in Pueblo, CO. I have vivid memories of that. I think the memory was enshrined by the pheromones of the 20 year old woman who lived next door. She lifted me up through the sun roof of a VW van.

22. Because the GOP is the "Law & Order Party"
They make the laws and order everyone else to obey them. Unless, of course they want their cohorts to break the laws to make sure GOP candidates stay in power.

10. the RWers like these
who have been and are directly responsible for enabling trump all 4 years that led up to trump trying to overthrow the election and his insurrectionists violently trying to overthrow our duly elected government deserve harsh sanction and shunning. Both politically and socially. They were, along with trump just as guilty for having incited, encouraged and implicitly charging the insurrectionist mob with finding, hanging, beating, burning at the stake # 3 in the line of succession after President-elect Joe Biden and vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and trump's VP.
We have the 'juice'...use it!!! Harshly. Coldly. |

11. Gee, Dems have every right to be wary of the GOP
A mob just tried to fucking KILL them. A few members of the GOP are QAnonense followers, and one of them insists on bringing a gun into the Capitol? Slam that down hard. NO ONE should be able to evade the metal detectors.

15. Stupid responses by Wack Job GOP
Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.) said in a tweet that Capitol police were treating lawmakers “like criminals.”
″We now live in Pelosi’s communist America!” she wrote. On the House floor, Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) blasted the metal detectors, calling them an “atrocity” and “appalling.” “Take note, America,” Steube said. “This is what you have to look forward to in the Joe Biden administration.” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also slammed the new security rules, claiming they restricted his constitutional rights. Some GOP lawmakers also turned their ire on new rules that level fines against members who fail to wear a mask. Rep. Tom McClintock (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wore masks with protest messages, with McClintock’s reading “This Mask Is USELESS” and Greene’s bearing the phrase “MOLON LABE,” a Greek term that translates to “come and take [them]." The phrase is known to be a rallying cry for the far right. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/01/13/republican-lawmakers-house-metal-detectors/ |

21. Guns are only allowed in their office, not the Capitol
“pursuant to the firearms regulations that Members received on Opening Day, firearms are restricted to a Member’s Office.”
“Failure to complete screening or the carrying of prohibited items could result in denial of access to the Chamber,” Blodgett wrote. So, deny access to the chamber. It's time to enforce these rules considering how some of them are complicit in the attack |
