McConnell is said to be pleased about impeachment, believing it will be easier to purge Trump

Source: New York Times

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking. The House is voting on Wednesday to formally charge Mr. Trump with inciting violence against the country.

At the same time, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader and one of Mr. Trump's most steadfast allies in Congress, has asked other Republicans whether he should call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of the riot at the Capitol last week, according to three Republican officials briefed on the conversations.

While Mr. McCarthy has said he is personally opposed to impeachment, he and other party leaders have decided not to formally lobby Republicans to vote "no," and an aide to Mr. McCarthy said he was open to a measure censuring Mr. Trump for his conduct. In private, Mr. McCarthy reached out to a leading House Democrat to see if the chamber would be willing to pursue a censure vote, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ruled it out.

Taken together, the stances of Congress's two top Republicans -- neither of whom has said publicly that Mr. Trump should resign or be impeached -- reflected the politically fraught and fast-moving nature of the crisis that the party faces in the wake of last week's assault by a pro-Trump mob during a session to formalize President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s electoral victory. As more violent images emerged on Tuesday from the mayhem wrought by the rioters, including of the brutal attack that ultimately killed a Capitol Police officer, and as lawmakers were briefed about threats of more attacks on the Capitol, rank-and-file Republican lawmakers grew angrier about the president's role in the violence.

Major donors are pulling out from the Republican party so -boing!- Mitch turns on a dime.
(A dime that he picks up and puts in his pocket.)

12. but will he hold a vote this week?

He has said he would "begin" hearings on 1/20. That lines up high priority hearings at exactly the same time biden needs his cabinet appointed. Mcturtle may just use the hearings as a two week reason to not move any of bidens appointees to a vote.

Plus Orange Maggat's lunacy likely played a role in flipping the Senate and thereby relegating him to minority leader. I doubt he's had a last minute change of heart.

8. How is this not getting more traction on DU?

If it's true and McConnell has turned on him, he's getting convicted. The rest of the Senate Republicans will fall in line if McConnell gives them the green light.

10. It is just being announced

I fainted when I saw the NYT breaking news banner on my iPad! A couple are reporting that CNN is talking about it now (I don't have the TV on).

Some were speculating that he might join to make the 17 needed in the Senate (I had posted in 2 threads on the speculation -1 today and 1 yesterday) -

When he fast-tracks this as he does judicial nominations, and when he does vote to convict, that will be news.

16. If this is true...

...this is MASSIVE.

Trump will be convicted in the Senate, and will at the very least never be allowed to run for public office again.

And we can probably safely say he is going to face a whole slew of other criminal and civil charges in the weeks, months and perhaps years ahead.

He.

Is.

Fucked.

17. Talk is cheap Mitch .... call for vote after the House impeachs him tomorrow

Gone by the weekend.

Hang him with his own words.

“Big protest in D.C. on January 6th,” Trump tweeted a week before Christmas. “Be there, will be wild!”

And on 1/6/21 Trump welcomed those "wild people" and gave 'em their marching orders to disrupt the Constitutionally
provided counting of the states certified electoral votes.

He needs unanimous consent to get the Senate back before the 19th. If even one Senator says no, there’s nothing that can be done before that.

Thanx for the post! What happens if nobody objects but nobody says no to the call back?

I wonder if some Republican Senators are going to go to the White House and tell
him to resign? The heat will just get worse and worse.

I'll try to find a link but it's been reported since yesterday.

30. Exactly. Someone else (Rachel? Pelosi? Both?) said the same thing yesterday. #CowardMitch

Moscow Mitch could easily recall the senate if both senate leaders call for it. It happened not that long ago (9/11 perhaps?) So hard to keep all the catastrophe's straight, but the point is, Mitch is being a goddamn coward by waiting for the Democrats to do it.

21. Then show some balls and vote to convict.

And tell your members to do the same.

Talk is cheap. Last week you were nearly in tears over the sedition and then you were saying there wasn’t enough time for impeachment. If you can ram through confirmation hearings to get one more conservative judge on the bench, surely you can expedite this to save the country.

Chickens are roosting, Mitch.

try to turn this on it's head and use it as a cudgel to trash the Dems? I wouldn't trust this asshat one iota to not try and gain some perceived advantage out of this. I mean the weasel only said "he's pleased", not that he'd actually vote yes to impeachment. Why is he only "pleased"?

he just lost his Majority Leader position, and has now lost a significant chunk of his campaign money with the death of Adelson, with the Fortune 500 companies suddenly shutting off their campaign financing to anyone who refused to accept the election of Joe Biden.

I.e., he just got financially fucked.

38. McConnell knows his own interests here

Trump lost and is no longer useful to McConnell's cause of filling the federal judiciary with conservative/rw judges. He also cost McConnell control of the Senate. By supporting impeachment, McConnell gets a measure of revenge for that. Conviction can also disqualify Trump from ever running again and strips Trump of travel budget, secret service, pension, etc. It serves to get Trump out of the way. It's a win all around for him and the establishment GOP.
