Michigan House punishes GOP Rep. Gary Eisen for hinting at Electoral College disruption

Source: Detroit Free Press

Michigan Republican legislative leaders pulled a GOP lawmaker from his committee assignments Monday after the lawmaker hinted he was part of a group that sought to disrupt or otherwise undermine the Electoral College vote slated to happen at the Capitol this afternoon.

Rep. Gary Eisen, R-St. Clair Township, made the comments Monday morning during an interview with Port Huron-area radio station WPHM. He was asked about the Electoral College, set to meet Monday in the state Senate chamber to cast the state's 16 electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden.

Eisen made the comments in the context of he and others in Lansing having some sort of event, either at the Capitol or somewhere else. He said he could not rule out the possibility of violence.

Eisen also made reference to a threat he said was received regarding safety at the Capitol. He questioned the veracity of threat, however, calling it "convenient" and implying it would impede efforts for Trump supporters to contest the Electoral College proceedings.

8. The adults in the room are speaking up now. trump and all of his bullies have lost all reasoning w/

logic, the clear and overwhelming evidence that Mr. Biden won, fair and square, with no cheating involved. Was trump's side free of cheating and what not? I suspect now, w/ the way they are whining and moaning about their loss, that in some manner, they did do some cheating...

Michigan GOP Leadership Denounces, Yanks Committee Posts from State Rep Who Implied Electoral College Protests at State Capitol Could Turn Violent

Michigan state Rep. Gary Eisen (R) was denounced by his state's Republican legislative leadership and had his committee assignments stripped for the rest of the year after he made incendiary comments on a local radio show on Monday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Eisen was called out by GOP House Speaker Lee Chatfield for intimating he would be participating in a protest that could end up targeting the capitol.

"We have been consistent in our position on issues of violence and intimidation in politics -- it is never appropriate and never acceptable," Chatfield said. Michigan's Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, was notoriously targeted by an anti-mask extremists earlier this year in a kidnapping-murder plot. "That applies to threats made toward public officials, and it must also apply when the public officials open the door to violent behavior and refuse to condemn it. We must do better."

On Monday morning, WPHM radio host Paul Miller had conducted in interview with Eisen and, at one point (staring at the 4:30 mark), asked him about the reports of earlier threats aimed at the state capitol, which the legislator seemed to dismiss as a "convenient" excuse to lockdown the building for that day's Electoral College vote.

Michigan lawmaker posts picture of firearms amid George Floyd protests
By Jorge Fitz-GibbonJune 3, 2020 2:02pm

A Michigan lawmaker is under fire for a Facebook post showing a stack of loaded firearm magazines and alluding to George Floyd protests, according to a report.

State Rep. Gary Eisen said in a social media post that a client came into his welding shop and alleged that those involved in the nationwide protests and riots are "liberals" because "liberals look for trouble and civil unrest and Conservatives PREPARE for it."

"... so i thought maybe I will load up a few more mags....,"
Eisen wrote, alongside a photo of several magazines and target ammunition.

The post drew a rebuke from dozens of Facebook users, including one poster who replied, "Your statement alone shows you are wanting something to happen and you should be representing the people who are being oppressed by a system that wants them dead."
