Sweden's frontline health care workers are quitting in worrying numbers as COVID cases spike
Source: Fortune
BY NICLAS ROLANDER AND BLOOMBERG December 13, 2020 3:05 AM PST Sweden faces a shortage of health-care workers as the number of resignations ticks up after a relentless year of caring for Covid patients. Sineva Ribeiro, the chairwoman of the Swedish Association of Health Professionals, says the situation is “terrible.” Even before the first wave of the pandemic back in March, there was “a shortage of specialist nurses, including at ICUs,” she said in a phone interview. The development shows that even countries with universal health-care systems are now struggling to keep up with the Covid crisis. This week, Stockholm’s intensive care capacity hit 99%, sending the city into a panic and prompting calls for outside help. But even if more ICU beds are provided, the bigger concern now is whether Sweden has enough health-care workers with the skills needed to look after the country’s sickest patients. 2. Whaaaat? I thought Sweden was perfect
I've heard many an anti-masker and anti-shutdown twerp say, "look at Sweden." According to them, Sweden is doing so well with no masks and no shut downs. No one gets sick. No one dies.

3. Good luck finding that "outside help," Sweden.
Not too many spare ICU nurses and docs available right now.

4. Sweden took no precautions. I look at this as a harbinger of things to come for the US
The difference being that Sweden has a government that will make sure you're okay if you need to change careers. Whereas, in the US, we offer no support. In fact, once you quit, you are likely to suffer greatly with no health insurance, no unemployment insurance, and few prospects for those who are changing careers because of unemployment and hiring standards.
If you live in the US, you are an indentured servant who can not quit their job without risking your life or the life of your loved ones. |

5. Sweden is the "control group" for doing little or no mitigation

8. Exactly. Their top health administrator pushed for herd immunity...
and had to apologize when Sweden was hardly better than the US in it's handling of the covid crisis.
None of the other Scandinavian or European countries were stupid enough to try that and thus had better control over the virus. |

9. And the idiocy of this
is because although this coronavirus is extremely contagious and fatal, it's STILL a "coronavirus", one the types of viruses that circulates as part of "cold season" and "herd immunity" doesn't really happen with many of the variants of viruses that make up "colds". Otherwise few would get colds anymore.
![]() And even the idea of "herd immunity" can have long term downsides - like all those "chicken pox parties", where years later, the infected can get shingles at the worst possible time of their lives (one of my cousins literally just had a shingles outbreak a couple months ago). |

10. I just got through my second bout with shingles and it was worse than the first time.
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

had it erupt in an odd location - right around one of her eyes, and it was awful for her.
