Trump Tells Pompeo: Go Wild on Iran, Just Don't Risk 'World War III'

Source: The Daily Beast

President Donald Trump may only have seven weeks left in office, but he’s given his top advisers the green light to batter the Iranian regime—anything that doesn’t hazard a full-on war before Joe Biden is inaugurated.

According to multiple U.S. officials familiar with the matter, in recent weeks Trump has taken a more passive role in personally overseeing Iran policy for the critical final months until Inauguration Day. One White House official last week described Trump as mostly “checked out” on this major foreign policy issue, having become consumed by his bumbling legal effort to steal the 2020 election amid the coronavirus pandemic, as well as by other his pet grievances of the moment.

But Trump has given some of his most hawkish administration officials, particularly his top diplomat, Mike Pompeo, carte blanche to squeeze and punish the Islamic Republic as aggressively as they wish in the coming weeks. All Trump asks is that they don’t risk “start[ing] World War III,” as the president has specifically put it in several private conversations with Pompeo and others, according to two senior administration officials.

That has left a host of options at the outgoing administration’s disposal—among them, a suffocating sanctions regime and a studied silence in the face of the assassination of Iranian nationals. Two officials who spoke to The Daily Beast said the administration is set to announce new sanctions on regime-linked companies and individuals in the coming weeks to solidify a years-long effort to paralyze Tehran’s economy.

4. Trumpsky has no idea what war is like and where

the brink of it is.

He'll be fostering plenty of death and destruction short of "WWIII."

His opportunities to be the tough guy are dwindling.

6. Fortunately the Iranians can read US news articles, too,

and are certainly aware of whatever fuckery Trump and Pompeo are up to. They don't want to start a war either.

7. It's coming, Baby, nuance is not their strong suit to say the least

plus we'll be relying on them for analysis, strategy, and judgment about how far to go.

Will you sleep these 7 weeks?

He was supposed to stride in there and bring peace to the region. Easy peasy.

9. Ummm... Iran demonstrated,...

rather unequivocally, that they have the ability to do real damage to real targets with their ballistic missiles. This could be a disaster if they say "F it" and let fly.

Operation Martyr Soleimani

10. Unintended consequences of Trump's taking it to the brink:

1. Iran "overreacts".
2. Iran attacks Israel. (Somehow I don't see Saudi Arabia and Mohammed bin Salman coming to Israel's defense.)
3. Iran uses a "small nuke".
4. Iran formally allies itself with Al Quaeda and/or ISIS and/or other groups dedicated to the Islamic State.
5. Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz.
6. All of the above.

11. How About If Trump Is Humored Here And We Let Him Impose More Economic Sanctions On Iran....

How much could such sanctions hurt Iran in the 50 days left of the Trump Administration? It's quite likely that there isn't enough time for any such sanctions to even take hold in these last 50 days.

Immediately after Jan 20, 2021 - Biden can lift the sanctions as a good faith peace offering to Iran to restart negotiations with the Iranians and get us back to the pre-Trump contract we had with Iran.

In the mean time - Trump is pacified that he accomplished something and he is taken out of the equation. Where Trump thinks he complicated things for Biden - he might actually provide Biden with a foot in the door to renegotiate the pre-Trump nuclear agreement.

Just a thought here. Does anyone think this might work?

13. It works whether we want it to or not.

Nothing can stop Pompeo or Netanyahu from doing what they want.

Biden has to clean up the mess regardless.

Let's just hope that Iran doesn't react by mining the Strait of Hormuz.

17. Trump is trying to create as many problems he can for Biden both for spite and

I suspect by orders from someone that lives in a cold climate where Vodka is the wine of the country.
In fact it is probably where Trump will be fleeing along with as much classified intel he can get ahold of to escape the potential state criminal charges he may be facing.

20. This is what I was going to write

I hope he is in contact and assuring them that whatever Trump starts, even if its a military strike, it is only temporary. And things should go back to "normal" soon.

Gawd I hope Iran has an appetite to re-sign a new anti-nuke deal. Sucks because hard liners have used Trump's aggressive response and ripping up of the deal to push to proceed with weapon building.
