YouTube suspends OANN for a week after it posted fake Covid-19 cure

YouTube on Tuesday barred One America News Network from posting new videos and livestreaming for one week, after the right-leaning media organization uploaded a fake cure for the coronavirus.

“After careful review, we removed a video from OANN and issued a strike on the channel for violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content claiming there’s a guaranteed cure,” a YouTube spokesperson told CNBC. “Additionally, due to repeated violations of our Covid-19 misinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we’ve suspended the channel from the YouTube Partner Program and as a result, its monetization on YouTube.

It was unclear what specifically OANN’s video said about a Covid-19 cure that made YouTube decide to suspend the channel.

The organization will have to reapply to YouTube’s Partner Program (YPP) if it wants the ability to make money off of its existing content again. YPP is YouTube’s program that connects large channels on the platform with advertisers. YouTube said broadly that companies will only be readmitted after they’ve fixed the issues that led to suspension.

Tuesday’s move marks YouTube’s largest crackdown against OANN. The social media giant has been criticized for allowing OANN to spread misinformation, such as false claims that President Donald Trump won the presidential election.

18. Two Trump-loving people in my family made announcements

on FB that they were done with Fox News and now just watch Newsmax and OANN. They want to live in an angry bubble where they can feel like white victims.

They haven’t posted in a while. I look ever so often at their feeds, like one would slow down to look at a car accident. They’re probably either in mourning or on Parler licking their wounds or both.

One has a gay son and another is someone who collects disability for her arthritis. I don’t understand their mentality nor do I want to.

20. I had the same thing happen

In my case it was my parents. They asked me how they could get NewsMax because they were upset with Fox News. I feigned ignorance on how they could access it in hopes they would just give up. That is when looked into newsmax and saw some of their videos on youtube. I could not believe how insane they all sounded. My mom also asked me setting up a Parler account. I'm not sure if she ever managed to do that. I can only imagine for the past three weeks that stuff has been on their TV constantly pounding whatever narrative they are trying to sell into their brains. No counter arguments are ever heard, nor are questions asked about what they are being told to believe. I am not looking forward thanksgiving dinner. I considered backing out, but there is a lot of stuff going on with my family and I would never forgive myself for doing so.

That cognitive dissonance is seems very common among Trump supporters. That's one of the things that upsets me the most, because I know for a fact my mom understands what it's like to be a single mother struggling trying to raise kids (she remarried later on) I also know both her and my step-father understand that insurance companies will screw people over if left to their own devices, and how if someone loses their job they are screwed (although less so now) I also know they understand how police can be aggressive and abuse their authority (based on my brothers) The list goes on and on.

They will say something that totally contradicts their actual experiences in life. I find that very hard to ignore. It's bad enough when they just repeat lies with no foundation in reality, but I can ignore that since I have plenty of people on the internet to argue with about that stuff. But when it's like personal stuff, it's far more frustrating and difficult to just let slide. I can only imagine how the son of the people you're mentioning feels.
