A server filmed a viral video of Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts maskless. Then she was fired.

Source: Washington Post

If she hadn’t picked up the dinner shift for a co-worker who had contracted the coronavirus, Karina Montanez would not have seen Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) posing maskless for photos and cradling a baby at a sports bar on election night.

When the 25-year-old server saw the governor remove his mask in the back of DJ’s Dugout, an Omaha-area restaurant, to talk and take photos with other maskless people, she pulled out her phone and started filming.

“Hey, Pete, where’s your mask? Where’s your mask, Pete?” Montanez said in a Snapchat video she later posted to Twitter. “What are you doing, Pete? We’re in a pandemic, Pete.”

The video went viral this week, leaving critics slamming Ricketts for refusing to issue a mask mandate in the state as coronavirus cases surge. But Montanez faced her own blowback: She was fired on Tuesday from the bar, for violating the company’s social media and cellphone policy, according to the owner.

3. He should have had on a mask, and the restaurant was justified in terminating her

She was brave to post that, but she was on the clock, and they had rules. I hope she can find another job.

7. I sure would

And it seems that it actually IS avoiding the plague to avoid DJ's.

5. Gotta Agree

Company time, company dime. You won't use your phone to photograph my customer, on my property, while I'm paying you. Glad you got viral. Boy-boy!

6. The amount of time she spent filming that would probably be equal

to a bathroom break.

9. It's not the time -- it's the content and intent that's in contention . . .

10. Peole have been saying she did it on "company time"

Looks like 17 seconds unless there's more somewhere.

Yes, it's inevitable she would be fired but don't make it about "company time."

11. Maybe she should have edited out the part that identified herself

And not posted it to her own personal social media account. Then she possibly wouldn't have been fired.

Whatever the case, I read that a few people have contacted her about a job, and she's also scheduled to have a conversation with her former boss to find out why she was fired.

As much as I agree with the fact that the governor should have been called out, I think customers should be able to enter an establishment with the reasonable expectation that an employee doesn't record them while they're there. If a customer had done it, that would have been fine.

15. It's not the money

Neither money or time is why. It's that you are using your position as an employee to take video of paying customers and then posting it on social media. A customer shouldn't worry about an employee taking their video & posting. Sure, normal citizens inside the restaurant can and should take video, but in essence that is what was done as she is no longer an employee. . .

Also:

Can you be fired for no reason in Nebraska?

Can my employer fire me for no reason? Nebraska is an “Employment at Will” state. That means that the employer and the employee have equal rights to terminate employment at any time for any reason as long as no other law is being violated (i.e. Workers' Compensation, FMLA, EEOC, etc.)

8. You're more irritated by that than the a-hole governor taking his mask off in a public setting?

By the way, I’m not disagreeing that she deserved to be fired, either.

14. I guess we all have our priorities

What stood out to me, in this story, is that this guy is not wearing a face mask, while holding a strangers baby, during a pandemic. Could just me though. LOL

12. both actions are utterly predictable

Ricketts is -- the leader that Nebraskans want (and deserve)
Employees filming patrons without consent (and with the intent of ridicule and exposure) -- probably leads to firing/suspension.

13. Ya gotta love the so called pro life Republican hypocrites

they force women to serve as human incubators and force them to have babies with their laws and then the Republicans turn around and possibly kill the babies by not wearing a mask and possible exposing the babies to Covid-19.

People seem to miss the big picture and want to argue about whether or not the waiter should be fired or whether or not she should have not filmed this. The big picture for me is that if you are going to be holding someone else's baby during a pandemic, maybe you should wear a fricken face mask. Seriously!!! WTF!!!

People can't see the forest from the trees and argue about trifles.

Aint that amurica

20. You could find out and let us know...

I however, wonder if the Governor knew his state's policies when he went out to eat and placed his constituents in jeopardy. One seems a wee bit more critical and relevant to the here and the now.

As was stated upthread however... "we all have our priorities."

21. If the article had reported solely that the Governor was going maskless, nobody would complain

The article written and posted in the OP went on to raise the fact that the waitress who took the video was fired as if that was relevant to the story.
