North Dakota Orders Mask Mandate, Business Restrictions

Source: Washington Post

BISMARCK, N.D. -- North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum ordered a statewide mask mandate and imposed several business restrictions late Friday in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus that has stressed the state's hospital capacity.

The Republican governor's executive order comes after increased pressure from doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to require face coverings. The directive goes into effect Saturday and will last until Dec. 13. Burgum said in a statement that doctors and nurses "need our help, and they need it now."

The mandate requires residents to wear face coverings in indoor businesses and indoor public settings, as well as outdoor public settings where physical distancing isn't possible. The order also includes exceptions for children under age 5, individuals with a medical or mental health condition or disability that makes it unreasonable to wear a mask, and religious services.

Failure to comply with the mandate is an infraction, with a penalty of up to $1,000, though it's not clear how the order will be enforced.

Burgum also directed all bars, restaurants to limit capacity to 50%, and closed all in-person service between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Large-scale venues also are limited to 25% capacity. Playoff championship contests and performance events sponsored by the North Dakota High School Activities Association during the month of November may continue, under the order. But all high school winter sports and other extracurricular K-12 school activities are suspended until Dec. 14...

The pause in school activities will help keep them open to in-person instruction, Burgum said.

The governor's order comes after the state reached a grim new milestone on Friday, as its COVID-19 death toll eclipsed the 700 mark, rising by 10 to 707, according to state health data.

11. Agreed. Like locking the barn door after the horse was stolen.

The situation is in my estimation criminal. Those in control have chosen to obey a madman and placed millions in jeopardy that has resulted in over 240,000 deaths. I resent and despise them to the depths of my being.

12. Same here!

The news is out there and we know what to do to keep us safe - but they choose to ignore any and all experts to follow Trump over his cliff!

18. Wish our

governor in Missouri would have a mask mandate. He just says people should act responsibly and wear a mask. Apparently he didnít follow his own advice and he got Covid late September. Some of our counties have mask mandates though and at least he doesnít interfere with that.

5. Probably because doctors and hospitals get extra money for each covid case

So it's an incentive to fudge the statistics
At least that's what Joni Ernst of Iowa said

22. Trump assured us virus would go away the day after the election, Nov 4

Sorry, you don't have it right. Trump assured us that the virus would go away the day after the election, Nov 4; it would just disappear. The Dems would just stop the hoax.

Sadly, Trump may have misunderestimated. The virus hoax will now end Nov 16, at 2 PM.

4. North Dakota has been #1 state for months for highest daily new cases per capita ,

7 day moving average
https://covidactnow.org/?s=1318327

Just in case some aren't aware of that rather dubious distinction.

So am glad to hear that they are doing something at long last.

Their test positivity rate is 19.8% is very high (which is bad news). Anything over 5% is considered quite serious in normal places.

Their testing rate is a very high 10.8 per 1,000 population per day (that's good) ( https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/tracker/overview ).

According to the above link, the test positivity rate is 16.2%. This page has a glitch: there's a panel on the right titled "About this Page" that hides the test positivity rate column. There's a big " (X) " for close at the upper right, but it's not working. So one must expand the page to full screen to see the test positivity rate column. (Or try changing the zoom level of your browser to zoom out a bit)

10. The doctors will have to medicate imbecile Kristi Noem to get an order in SD

Noem is completely vapid and does nothing but recite idiotic talking points.

It's mind-boggling that voters pull levers for clearly incompetent candidates like Noem, et al.

The order also includes exceptions for children under age 5, individuals with a medical or mental health condition or disability that makes it unreasonable to wear a mask, and religious services.

Did I miss something? So, no mask needed in church, which is one of the worst places to be during the pandemic?
