In total, the Trump campaign had sought to throw out almost 9,000 absentee ballots because their outer envelopes lack names, dates or addresses or some combination of the three that voters could have filled out. In five related cases, Judge James Crumlish of Philadelphia County's Court of Common Pleas said the Trump campaign couldn't invalidate 8,329 ballots it alleged were improper. The judge ruled those ballots should be processed and counted. 5. Some info from the link about the missing information
Haaz found that state law didn't require voters to fill out the address sections on the envelopes, and the instructions on the ballots didn't tell voters they must fill them out.
"Voters should not be disenfranchised by reasonably relying upon voting instructions provided by election officials," Haaz wrote. The Trump campaign had said in court that it wasn't alleging voting fraud in the cases -- just attempting to enforce the rules. ![]() |

6. Here's the deal with those outer envelopes
Here in Philly, ALL of them already have the voter's name, address, and both a barcode AND QR code associated with that voter, pre-printed on the back of the envelope on the lower right corner of the envelope. This little label is directly opposite and below the section where the voter would hand print a date/name/address/signature and is under the section that a 3rd party "witness" would complete if submitting on behalf of a voter.
The squared-off oval depicted with dashed lines shown below on the bottom right corner has a pre-printed name/address of the voter and includes a barcode AND a QR code in that little section. This lets elections workers quickly scan the outer envelope into the system without opening it, to confirm that the ballot was "received" and associate it to the person it was received from so that voter can no longer attempt to vote again in any manner (and that data gets sent to the state who will send an email to say the ballot was "timely received and recorded", although it would not have been "canvassed and tallied" until election day once they started the official counting) - ![]() (ETA to note, the above image was not created by the city but one of many voter-focused organizations) Basically they wanted to pull what they routinely do in red states to blue voters - notably POC - to disenfranchise based on any "infraction" they can manufacture. It brings to mind the Oprah Winfrey scene in the movie "Selma" - If anything, there was a massive focus on "naked ballots" (where there was a near-freakish level of hysteria about the potential for "hundreds of thousands of ballots being tossed" due to that and at the end, there were supposedly "only" 10,000 that came in without the "secrecy envelope", which to me is still 10,000 lost votes, but was a number considered "minor" to the city at this point. This was only our 2nd election using "no-excuse absentee ballots" (the first being the primary, when a significant number of people DON'T vote), so this was new to much of the occasional-voting populace. |
