Warren Wants to Be Treasury Secretary

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Political Wire

Elizabeth Warren wants to be Joe Biden’s Treasury secretary and will make her case for it if he wins next week, according to three Democratic officials who have spoken with her inner circle,” Politico reports.

“Warren’s moves could set up the marquee fight between the party’s left and its center over what will be one of the most consequential Cabinet roles in the next administration. The Treasury Department will be tasked with steering the U.S. economy out of a deep recession, even as the country continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic.”

8. No, there are better choices for that position.

Warren has never done trial work and has no experience in federal criminal law outside the financial area. Someone like Sally Yates or Preet Bharara would be much more suitable. Let Warren do something suited to her area of expertise - finance and consumer protection - unless she stays in the Senate.

They can control the interim senator the governor chooses for 5 months either by designating a party or even submitting a list of choices. The GOP legislature in NC passed such a law.

65. Her nomination is dependent on the Senate results of course

Ditto with Sen. Sanders who seems to be lobbying for a cabinet position as well, in a state with a Republican governor.

If the Democrats win the Vermont governor race, it could raise his prospects.

But all depends on what the configuration of the Senate will be politically.

If the Democrat can win 53 or 54 seats , it will open up a lot more opportunity for senators seeking jobs in the cabinet or as an ambassador.

24. We could lose a Senate majority if Sanders and Warren go into the administration.

Without that majority, absolutely nothing will happen for at least two years. Both Vermont and Massachusetts have Republican governors who will appoint Republicans to fill those seats. Senator Coons has also been mentioned for a position. At least his state has a Democratic governor. Warren and Sanders need to wait until we have a secure Senate majority. Anything else just throws the whole Biden agenda into the trashcan Mitch McConnell is holding.
