Yelp adds alerts for businesses accused of racism

New York (CNN Business)Businesses accused of "overtly racist actions" from customers may soon see a warning on their Yelp page.
The crowd-sourced review platform said it will allow customers to flag racist behavior, and it will place an alert on an establishment's page when it "gains public attention for reports of racist conduct, such as using racist language or symbols." A link to a news article explaining the business' problematic behavior will be included in the message.
"As the nation reckons with issues of systemic racism, we've seen in the last few months that there is a clear need to warn consumers about businesses associated with egregious, racially charged actions to help people make more informed spending decisions," Noorie Malik, VP of user operations, wrote in a blog post.
Reports of businesses engaging in alleged racist behavior on Yelp has increased since late May, when the police killing of George Floyd sparked protests across the US.

With bots and AI, I can see stuff like this being weaponized and used to ruin people's businesses or careers without just cause.

Im glad I never opened an account with them for my business. But they did call a lot to try to get me to do it. They do this presentation which is pretty convincing but I remember how one of the businesses they gave me as an example of how well you could do closed soon after.

(11,949 posts)Yelp is too often used by jealous competitors to try to take businesses down. This gives them a more powerful tool.
For every actual case of racism there will be 20 reported.
Trip Advisor, while not actually good, is better.
At least thats my opinion. Ive just seen friend hurt due to bogus yelp reviews.
