Disney is laying off 28,000 employees as pandemic hammers its theme parks

Source: CNN

Josh D'Amaro, the chairman of Disney (DIS) Parks, said the staffing cuts were necessary because of the "prolonged impact" of coronavirus on business. That included "limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic."

"As difficult as this decision is today, we believe that the steps we are taking will enable us to emerge a more effective and efficient operation when we return to normal," D'Amaro said in a statement.

Disney's parks unit, which brought in more than $26 billion in fiscal 2019, was crushed during the second quarter of this year. The segment's operating profit fell 58% compared with the previous year, and Disney reported a loss a billion dollars in profit just a few weeks into the global health crisis.

1. Can't blame them.

I would not go near an amusement park right now or for the near future.

2. I was at Disneyland the last day it was open

The Workers were so scared but kept happy faces. ThIs is so bad and will cause a large ripple effect in Orange County economically. Interesting to see if Orange County remains the red part of the state. If the corona virus had been handled better by the pos Mf45 Disneyland might have reopened.

4. Er, OC is no longer red. Every Congressman from OC in DC is a Dem.

2018 made it so.

6. But there are parts of Oc that are red and they fought back on wearing masks at the peak

Of the corona virus. I have a cousin who lives there and she said she is shocked so many people walk around maskless but when she goes into LA county there is more mask compliance.

7. We still have R assholes here, but they're a vocal minority.

I live in Lake Forest. Katie Porter is my Rep. Most of the signage in my neighborhood supports Ds/Biden.

9. A question I keep getting these emails saying she is behind in the polls

Is this one of those emails scaring you to vote, Or does she have a good chance to be re elected. I really like her and think she has a big future In the Democratic Party.

14. I was in Las Vegas the last day it was open.

Enjoyed it while I could but you could definitely tell people were scared of what was going to happen with this shitty virus. It was so weird being in the middle of the Park MGM when they announced that the NBA, NCAA, and NHL had canceled their seasons. And yet my event got spared.

15. We were in Disneyland Wednesday thru Friday March 13th

Wednesday was packed. Thursday it rained and Friday we went on more rides that day then the other two combined! I was in our hotel and this little girl was upset that her father cancelled the trip when he heard Disneyland was closing.

16. I was in Las Vegas for 311 Day.

And I went to the 3/11 show, then the next day was when all hell broke loose. I had considered packing it in and flying home that night, but of course it's the one day when the Wifi goes out in my whole hotel complex and I couldn't make any changes to my reservation. So instead I carried on because I couldn't get a flight change or a refund for my tickets and that was it. I'm still amazed I made it out of there unscathed. But yeah I'll never take that kind of chance again.

17. Oh that was rough

Glad you finally made it out there. We drove from Northern California and highway was very light on traffic going home! We got home in record time very little traffic.

18. Yeah I kind of felt like I was in that movie "The World's End".

I was at a point where I felt like, do I carry on and act like nothing is wrong or pack it in and go home? And the further things went, the stranger it got. At least in Vegas there's plenty of beer, booze, and food available.

10. GOPers frame this as economy vs. pandemic safety.... it didn't have to be like that.

If tRump had done his job at the start of this by encouraging his cult followers to wear masks we could be getting back to normalcy. Instead, we're now in a situation where people have to choose between getting sick and possibly dying or going broke.
