New York City voters get absentee ballots with wrong names, addresses

Source: USA Today

Voters in New York City say they've received absentee ballots with the wrong names and addresses on their ballot envelopes, adding confusion to how they'll vote and whether their votes will count in the November election.

It's unclear just how many voters are facing the issue but scores on Twitter and in local media reported receiving envelopes to return their ballots which have the wrong names, addresses and voter IDs on them.

Rachel Garbade, 27, who lives in Brooklyn, said the issue "adds more anxiety and fear" about whether her vote will count in an election already plagued with doubts about how the large influx of mail-in votes due to the coronavirus pandemic will be processed and counted.

"I don't understand why something of this level importance wasn't taken so super seriously and errors weren't double checked," Garbade told USA TODAY.

The problem appears primarily centered in Brooklyn after voters in several neighborhoods received their absentee ballots Monday. Garbade, however, said her grandfather, who lives in Queens, had the same issue.

If so it makes some sense there'd be a certain % of the time that would happen.

Of course one should be fairly aware of the names of the people that lived there before, I know I sure as hell am, I feel like I know these people I get so much f****** mail for them all.

But despite that ... I've NEVER gotten election related stuff for any of them. Only me.

Some voters said the envelope they received was for a person who lived just blocks away or on the same street. The outer envelope that includes their ballots was correctly addressed to them.

In a statement, Michael J. Ryan, the executive director of the New York City Board of Elections, said the error was caused by a vendor, Phoenix Graphics, that was contracted to print and mail ballots to voters in Brooklyn and Queens, the city's two largest boroughs.

What the exactly does that first paragraph even mean? The two sentences appear to be contradictory.

Also ... the city should sue the shit out of Phoenix Graphics.

More than 1 in 5 mail-in ballots were rejected in New York City during the state primary June 23, the city’s certified election results revealed this week.

City election officials rejected 84,000 ballots — 21 percent of all those received by election officials. More than 403,000 ballots were returned to election officials, according to city data, but only about 319,000 absentee ballots were counted, the certified results showed.

If NYC can't get it right....

These people may have to go to a poll and actually vote. They can bring the ballot with the errors with them to turn in.

Keep copies of everything. We must help each other out, and if they are a senior citizen, like me, they may need it. (although I don't.) It is ok to get assistance.

It TAKES A VILLAGE, people.

... nor is the Postal Service to blame.

The printer from Rochester botched this up, and it's the same company that prints Chump's campaign materials. They stuffed the personalized ballots into envelopes that were addressed to different recipients. So each person received their envelope with the wrong ballot inside. Now the printer will probably say there's not enough time to print and mail another set of materials.

I used to work in direct mail advertising once upon a time, many years ago. In fact I was a production manager and I handled outsourcing of printing and matched-mailing contracts to outside vendors.

I hear you, the vendors must show proof that they did their job correctly. and if they haven't done it right then MY job is on the line. However in these weird times of the pandemic I doubt very much that the vendor in Rochester allowed customers on their shop floor to oversee their projects. And I doubt that any production manager from Brooklyn (or somewhere in the NYC area) was able or willing to go to Rochester to oversee what should have been a routine matched-mailing program.

These companies do this type of work all the time, that's why they get awarded those contracts. This company Phoenix Technologies, I don't know anything about them, but they majorly fucked up. It has to be deliberate and politically motivated, that's all I can say. Maybe the night manager is a raving Chump lunatic, I don't know. There's going to be a huge liability issue and they are at fault.

For cripe sake and they probably tossed the yellow card from the BoE.

If you move, don't expect them to know where you are, if you didn't change the address on your Drivers license, don't expect them to know where you live.Like wise with your vehicle registration. If you haven't voted in the last 4 yrs or longer don't expect them to know where your live, you could have been purged.

Ps if you don't have a computer the NYPL has hundreds.

and mostly Democratic votes would be considered spoiled and rejected.

This was a no-bid contract to a company that either---

or
-- assumed their "mistake" would go unnoticed.

Most states have a site to check your voter registration and lookup polling place. In any state that has early voting people should just go in on a quiet day and wear proper PPE.

States that have typically not used mail-in voting are clearly going to have issues, as they are 'learning on the job', which is worrisome in such states that are swing states.
