ByDaniel Uria

Aug. 9 (UPI) -- At least one person died and one other was critically injured after 21 people were shot at a large gathering in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.

Police Chief Peter Newsham said 17-year-old Christopher Brown was killed in the shooting and an unidentified off-duty police officer who appeared to have been attending the party was injured and is "fighting for her life."

. . .

Two of the victims were 17 years old and the rest were adults. Newsham said that the injuries to the other 19 victims are not believed to be life-threatening.

He added that no permit was issued for the gathering which was believed to have been attended by hundreds of people, as gatherings of more than 50 people are currently prohibited in Washington, D.C., due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. I sure didn't miss shootings while we were sheltering in place/quarantining.

Quarantining is apparently the only way to stop mass shootings in America. Nothing and no one else will.

14. There's some really cheap ones, but a decent one is going for around $400 these days.

Oculus Quest or Samsung Odyssey+ are around that price and are quality units.

3. Speaker trucks needed so the uninformed find out what is going on in the world?

We see that in Chicago, too.

Large groups - even on the lakefront - which is a huge "no no" since the virus began.

When I see these people - without masks walking about AND the picnicking crowd (we are supposed to "keep moving" while in the lakefront park) I am gobsmacked as to who they are and why they aren't abiding by the simple rules - keep moving - wear a mask - keep a 6' distance. Its all we hear and has been for months - newspapers, tv, radio, online - yet so many are still refusing to comply.

If we are truly serious about getting a grip on this pandemic I think we will need trucks hourly traveling the neighborhoods telling people they are endangering the rest of us if they won't adhere to the guidelines.

8. So far there isn't a lot of information

about the gathering, but the police officer who was critically injured, was attending the gathering off duty, not as a cop.

5. I sure as Hell hope they have 0 Tolerance for sniper attacks on public gatherings?

There didn't appear to be much information on the purpose of the gathering, the nature of the victims. It might have some hints to the shooters motivation...

6. I doubt if it's "sniper" since police are looking for 3 or more suspects.

The article didn't say if the shooters were shooting from outside, or if they were among those gathered.

7. Well, I never said they were good snipers.

But more seriously, I received the impression that the groups was fired on from the outside, but true that's not stated certainly. Has their been release of details on the suspects?

9. This was an "annual block party"

At least 21 people shot, one fatally, at a party in Southeast Washington

Residents of the Greenway neighborhood said that the annual block party draws people from across the District to the residential streets off Minnesota Avenue SE, south of East Capitol Street. A flier advertised the fifth annual “34th-n-EAT” cookout beginning Saturday night, and indicated free food and drinks, with relatives of the teenage victim saying it drew an even larger crowd than in prior years.

The flier promised a “drama free event.”

First thing I figured when I saw the headline was "annual outdoor event" (whether a "block party" or "picnic" or equivalent). It's been sortof a long time black cultural thing to have these types of events in late summer. For example we used have what was called the "Black Family Reunion" where people would gather to bbq in Fairmount Park and there would be activities and whatnot set up along with and there were headliners and I think that eventually evolved into "The Roots Picnic" (hosted by that musical group with other performers).

In no uncertain terms, Philly's Mayor and Health Director cancelled every single "annual" event here in the city - including those held outside, through to the end of February. No exceptions. And that included the 3-day "Made in America" festival, the oldest Thanksgiving Parade in the nation, and the Mummer's Parade on New Years.

We are determined NOT to repeat 1918 here. As it is, we still end up with neighborhood blocks doing their annual block parties, some of which get out of hand.

Seems that would have made the news.

I haven't heard a thing.

12. Not yet-

But I think the number of dead from Sturgis Covid cases will far exceed this.
