House committee requests hearing with postmaster general amid mail-in voting concerns

Source: The Hill

The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Monday asked Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to answer questions at an upcoming hearing as concerns mount over delivery delays and how they could affect mail-in voting.

Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) announced the committee sent a letter to DeJoy asking for his testimony on Sept. 17 to “examine operation changes to the U.S. Postal Service.”

“The Committee on Oversight and Reform requests your testimony at a hearing to examine recent changes to U.S. Postal Service (USPS) operations and standards and the need for on-time mail delivery during the ongoing pandemic and upcoming election, which as you know may be held largely by mail-in ballot,” Maloney wrote in the letter to DeJoy.

The letter indicates that Maloney tried to schedule a hearing this week but the postmaster general had a meeting with the board of governors. Maloney said staff confirmed his availability for the September hearing.

1. This is an important step to protect our democracy.

There has been far too much interference with our mail delivery to date.

Nothing must be allowed to interfere with our ballots being delivered after we vote, in a very timely manner.

7. I would not trust the mail now for timely delivery of ballots.

If possible, it would be better to drop off completed ballots at the election offices. Many have drop boxes for this purpose.

Hearings are good, but what authority does Congress have to order that the changes DeJoy has mad be undone? Trump will continue to try to destroy vote by mail as his reelection chances slip.

6. A month ago my incoming packages were swift

now my outgoing don't get going for a couple of days.

It's not just voters' mail. It's people who depend on USPS for meds, bill payments.

8. Maybe

Maybe we should appeal to Putin. At the very least, call in the National Guard, or ask for volunteers from the community.

9. Sounds like Subpoena time to me. He's personally put national infrastructure in jeopardy.

His job description, which he signed in his contract, requires him to address critical interference in mail delivery as a priority of the job. It is not optional. it is not subject to his interpretation. It is spelled out in specifics.

There are severe federal penalties for interfering with mail delivery which apply to USPS employees as well as citizens.

They should not play nice with this jerk. Start with federal warrants and warm up the thumb screws.

16. Meds, bill payments, our votes-by-mail, and many small businesses depend on the USPS,

....not to mention the glaring conflict of interest he has in taking that position!

They need to subpoena him NOW!!

17. Why wait till mid September? That's effin STUPID to give them that

much lead time to collapse the service infrastructure.

Fvcking stupid that Republicans are able to rush hearings and control the public narrative while Democrats always give in to the ‘yeah, I can find time to testify, oh, let’s say....7weeks’ set up always offered by Reps.
