Banned ex-volunteer arrested for Democratic Party office fire in Phoenix

Source: KTAR Phoenix

PHOENIX – A banned former Democratic volunteer was arrested for arson Wednesday in the fire that destroyed the party’s Maricopa County headquarters in Phoenix last week, authorities said.

Matthew Silvanus Egler, 29, was booked on one count of arson of an occupied structure, a class 2 felony, in connection to the blaze set early Friday morning in central Phoenix.

Egler had been banned from volunteering at the Democratic office “due to the nature of his previous behavior,” according to a joint press release from the Phoenix fire and police departments.

He claimed responsibility for the fire on social media and threatened more violence, according to the release.

30. I think that

people should keep the Nixon re-election campaign in mind. The Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) had their people "volunteer" with Democratic candidates' campaigns during the primary. They did this to both spy and "rat-fuck" (their term). More, they had plans to literally kidnap people they identified as leaders of the young people's opposition to Nixon. I suspect we are seeing similar activities in cities such as Portland. Of course, I may be influenced in my thinking by Roger Stone, who spanned the decades between Nixon and Trump's re-election campaigns.

32. Very true...Donald Segretti leaps to mind...

From Wikipedia:
“ Donald Henry Segretti (born September 17, 1941, in San Marino, California) is an attorney best known for working as a political operative with then-U.S. President Richard Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President during the early 1970s. Segretti served four and a half months in prison after investigations related to the Watergate scandal revealed his leading role in extensive political sabotage efforts ( "ratfucking" ) against the Democrats.[1] “

34. Yes!

Good call!

In my opinion, although he is the most famous/infamous of their rat pack, he was not as horrible as some of the others. But he was horrible. There were a number of them, not all identified in the Senate's investigation, that were more criminal and much more dangerous.

21. This happens

Volunteers get recruited from wherever.
Guy could have walked in off the street.
Parties get what they can take.
No background checks locally.

There are a few bad apples.
It isn't a statement of his ideology or the party's ideology.

We had to ban a violent guy from our Democratic county meetings and offices.

I hope this brings about more motivation for background checks.

Ask any bouncer, bartender, or anyone that deals with lots of volunteers - there are those among the expelled, who will do the worst shit their twisted mind can work up, as revenge.

This thread is going too political

There are bad apples and organizations are willing to accept any free help. Parties don't have budgets to vet volunteers.

13. Volunteers require the same kind of management that paid staff receives.

As someone who managed an nonprofit charitable organization that included volunteers, I can tell you that occasionally you need to fire a volunteer who gets out of line.

We required volunteers to complete a job application, complete a "can you do the task" assessment, and sign an acknowledgement that although they received no pay, they were bound by the same ethical obligations to the mission of the organization as the paid staff, and would be subject to the same managerial supervision.

The volunteers who showed up with an "intense passion" for the cause were the most problematic. Very soon, they started believing that management or their paid co-workers were not "doing enough", or not "doing it right." And that's when the trouble starts.

Volunteers are welcomed at any organization. The help is certainly needed. But managers who don't want to correct or discipline the volunteer because the volunteer might get offended and leave, (or worse ... in this case) are not doing their organization a favor.

Are you suggesting that "they" made up the story that he was a former volunteer, and the Democrats aren't disputing the accusation?

What does the news station being owned by a company who's owned by the LDS Church have anything to do with what you just said?

The OP makes it sound like the news station made this up.

22. Not anymore, every news outlet in town has the same story.

My original skepticism had to do with the 1st source, but like I said, everybody else has it now.
Although the references to Jussie Smolette and Bubba Wallace are par for the course here.

Ya know, I come back to town for a few days and this news breaks and a lumber train catches fire and collapses the bridge over Tempe Town Lake!

Good thing I'm leaving again tomorrow.

He seems to be posting strange paranoia posts about Ivanka Trump being pregnant and cheating on her husband; then another post about psychological manipulation; and one a post about the police doing something to him.

He didn't seem as bad in the earlier posts, but the past month went down hill and viewers quit "liking" and commenting on his posts.

28. Phoenix Police and Fire Departments Joint Press Release

Phoenix Police Make Arrest in Connection With Fire at Democratic Party Headquarters
JULY 29, 2020 12:00 AM

The Phoenix Police Department has arrested a man in connection with a fire at the Maricopa County Democratic Party office building.

Matthew Egler was arrested Wednesday morning on arson charges. The 29-year-old was a former volunteer at the office but had recently been banned from continued volunteer service.

The fire happened after midnight on Friday, July 24 at the offices near Central and Thomas in Downtown Phoenix. The fire was extinguished but not before causing substantial damage to the building.

Investigators from the Fire Investigation Task Force, comprised of the Phoenix Fire Department and Police Department and in partnership with the ATF, investigated the fire. Surveillance video showed a man arriving alone in a car in the overnight hours. The video shows the suspect breaking glass to get into the building and then lighting an incendiary fire inside. The man then drove off.

Task Force Investigators were able to link the vehicle from the surveillance video to a family member of Egler. The car was found abandoned in Chandler.

Further investigation revealed Egler had posted information on social media linking him to the crime and threatening additional violence.

Investigators found Egler at a family member’s home in Peoria. He was arrested and booked on one count of Arson of an Occupied Structure.

29. Democratic Leaders joint statement

Democratic leaders in a joint statement said they were "deeply saddened and shocked" by the news. Arizona Democratic Party Chairwoman Felecia Rotellini and Maricopa County Democratic Party Chairman Steven Slugocki said the fire by one of their own would not distract them in November.

"As we work to navigate the process of finding a new home, we want to express our humble thanks and deep appreciation to all those who have reached out during this challenging time and have made generous donations," their statement said. "We thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
