A New Hampshire radio station cuts ties with conservative host after she filmed herself yelling

Source: CNN

A New Hampshire radio station cut ties with a conservative host after she filmed herself verbally attacking landscapers who were speaking Spanish.
Dianna Ploss, who hosted the Dianna Ploss Show on WSMN 1590, livestreamed a video of herself on Facebook as she confronted a group of workers and asked if any were undocumented immigrants.
"It's America. You should be speaking English," she says in the video while recording the workers on the job. "Is anybody here illegal? Are these guys illegal?"
Later in the video when a man who witnessed her rant questioned why she was "harassing" the workers, Ploss turns to the camera, and says, "He's a Black man and he's going to protect the brown man from this White woman whose practicing White privilege because she happened to walk by and heard this guy talking to all of these guys doing this work in Spanish."

Apparently, the main requirement for being a right-wing radio talk show host STILL is to just be an asshole.

2. She should have been fired for harassing people on the street

You can't say some people who worked at that radio station didn't know she's racist

4. What's striking is that racists now believe it's ok to verbally abuse non-whites

It should be obvious to even the most casual observer that tRump has emboldened racists and white supremacists throughout this country.

5. Oh, dear lord.

I get so fucking sick of people screaming at those who speak some other language.

I live in New Mexico. I hear LOTS of Spanish. One of the things I'm in constant awe of here is that I'll be in a line of some kind, and the person waiting on us will be speaking Spanish to those in front of me, and as soon as I step up they switch to English. Apparently I have a giant invisible A, for Anglo, on my forehead.

I have a friend whose mother's family was from Italy, so he grew up speaking Italian as well as English. In high school he studied French and German. In college he had a girlfriend from Puerto Rico. After college he went into the Peace Corps and was sent to Malaysia, and of course learned Bahasa Malay. I love it when he visits me. We'll be in some random place, and the next thing I know he's speaking to someone in one of his several languages. Heck, the last time he visited me we were out at a tourist site and he came across some visitors from Indonesia, and since their native language is very close to Malay, he was happily chatting away with him.

In defense of most Americans, we generally have to go a very long way to be in a place where the locals aren't speaking English. But that does not give anyone the right to abuse someone for speaking anther language.

Back when I was first here, about a decade ago, I had a temp job in the office of one of the middle schools. During the day certain students spent an hour there doing some sort of office work. About the second hour of the day were two young ladies, probably 6th graders, and they started speaking to each other in Spanish. Suddenly they had very guilty looks on their faces. I suspect they'd been told it was rude to speak Spanish in front of someone who didn't understand. I simply told them that I didn't know very much Spanish, but I'd be listening carefully only because I needed to learn more. They relaxed and spent the rest of the hour happily chatting away. I probably picked up six or seven words at best. Sigh. I need to get better at understanding Spanish.

9. I felt the same way when living in NM: the brain was willing, but...

... I just never learned to follow spoken Spanish. How many Latinos are bilingual is, as you noted, a constant amazement.

17. Even if you never learned to follow spoken Spanish, I'm going to go out on a limb here

and guess that you never screamed at locals for speaking Spanish. I'm guessing you just sort of sighed and went about your English speaking way.

It truly is the effortless bilingualism that I see every day that strikes awe in me. My best second language is French, because I started learning it when I was twelve, spent some time in Paris staying with a family where no one there spoke English, which really brought me up to speed. When I do come across a French speaker I cheerfully speak French, and I just love it. My Spanish is more limited. Essentially, I can communicate basics, but not chit-chat. I envy the truly bi or multi-lingual.

27. I used to have black hair

and sometimes people were uncertain regarding my exact ethnicity. When I was taking adult education classes at a high school in a working class neighborhood, some of the Spanish-speaking students looked back at me a little sheepishly when they were having an animated conversation about something.

Another time, a young woman was photocopying some handwritten, Spanish language material next to me and she had the same uncomfortable look as she glanced at me sideways. I suspect something rude/naughty was being communicated and there was a concern that I might possibly know what was going on.

BTW, I read years ago that the reason the United States does NOT have a legislated official language is that the Founding Dudes weren't keen on the idea of declaring it to be English what with us rebelling against the English and all that. Most of the Dudes, being educated types, spoke Latin and there was some consideration of making Latin our Lingua Franca.

Depending on the sort of job a person wants, of course it makes sense to speak English. And the children of most immigrants do/will speak it. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't be permitted to enjoy the enrichment of speaking the language of their native heritage. My grandfather never spoke a word of English that I understood, and he did railroad work. My dad did a lot of translating for his parents, and managed to become a lawyer. This scenario has played out for generations in America, and if the alarmist idiots would just calm down, then it will continue.

What really alarms them is that there is signage in Spanish presented fairly commonly nowadays. People like my RW, Italian American relatives complain about it and insist that our grandparents had to learn English, etc, etc.

They just refuse to admit that our grandparents managed to get by and that their kids helped. (see my point above) Also, while they claim to revere the free market system, they can't wrap their heads around the fact that immigrants in our grandparents day came from dozens of countries and Italian was only one of them. The more recent wave of immigrants--while from many different countries--speak a common language in Spanish and catering to the needs of that market group with Spanish language signage just makes good economic sense.

And yelling at people on the street minding their own business having a conversation in a language that you don't happen to understand makes no sense. It is both stupid and rude. Why not just yell at deaf people for speaking sign language--not that they would hear you--or yell at blind people for reading Braille?

Those same aggressive, rude people probably think that the French are full of themselves for ignoring them when they visit France and try to get about without learning any French.

6. I saw this last night....

It was especially upsetting. The contempt that this low-life, sorry excuse for a human being displays is devastating. Those guys were completely minding their own business and doing their job. The way she was screaming at them and saying into her recording "this is how your tax dollars are being spent." (It was a private company). I googled her and was happy to see that she'd been fired. I want something to happen to her-I don't mean physically - I mean I want to see her pay in some way (over and above her losing her job). Laws needs to be enacted for public harassment for what we're seeing these "Karens" and their male counterparts are doing. I know that's not realistic. I just feel so horrible to see those guys being demeaned. I wish I could hug each and every one of those workers and tell them .....I don't know what I'd tell them....

7. Why did they fire her - she was behaving exactly like RW hate radio host s

usually behave! A lot of raging in a loud angry tone of voice. Occasionally I try to listen to some of them but can't take it for very long. I do believe that some (many? most?) of their listeners are adrenalin addicts - aka rageaholics - otherwise who could listen to that.

11. That reminds me of me dear sainted mother...

She's in her 90's; as I've told her before, thank God my good mommy raised me and not my Fox mother. (She's one of those that Fox news brainwashed in her old age )

Anyway, she was mocking a Chinese lady's accent in a Chinese (!) restaurant and for once I didn't bite my tongue and scolded her.

After she got done literally pouting, she talked about her immigrant parents getting mocked for their accent and her classmates making fun of them as well.

Just my story that came to mind when I read your comment about assholes

14. When I see this in California, I don't let this Bull $h1t go unanswered ...

For those in California, feel free to use the following, it gets them every time.

When I hear anyone say, "Why are you speaking Spanish, this is America, you should be speaking English", or any variation of this statement.

I calmly walk up to them and ask them one question;
"Do you know what language the California Constitution is written in?"

They always respond, "English"

Here is when I school them,
"Yes, but it's also written in Spanish. Not a translation, they were written simultaneously. Do you want to know why?
Because the official language of California is both Spanish and English."

Then I finish with, "Why don't you learn to speak Spanish?"

Their look is priceless.

18. Really? I had NO idea that the California Constitution was written in both languages.

Hooray! I am under the impression that right now New Mexico is the only state that is officially bi lingual. And speaking from personal experience, at least in my part of the state, a lot more than half of the people here speak Spanish as their first language.

When I first moved here I got a job at the local hospital doing out patient registration, meaning we did the check in and gathered insurance information from people showing up to get blood tests or x-rays or MRIs and the like. Many of those checking in spoke little or no English, and I was always grateful to my coworkers who could help out and translate for me. I never once felt that those people needed to learn English. I always felt that I needed to learn more Spanish. I will say that my passive Spanish got very good during that time. I got so I could understand eighty to ninety percent of what was said. Alas, after leaving that job my Spanish deteriorated. Which is a genuine shame.

22. First, what part of New Mexico? I went to NMSU when my parents ...

retired to Las Cruces.
2nd, Iím Mexican/American or American/Mexican, and my parents always spoke Spanish t me
& my siblings, and we spoke English back.
So I literally understand exactly what people are saying when anyone speaks Spanish to me.
But because I donít practice speaking Spanish, I have a harder time conversing, so I donít speak as well as Iíd like in Spanish.
I can carry a conversation, but I have to think about what I want to say before I say it and sometimes I donít remember the actual word Iíd like to say.

Yes Californiaís Constitution is actually written in both languages.
