Hong Kong: UK makes citizenship offer to residents

Source: BBC

Up to three million Hong Kong residents are to be offered the chance to settle in the UK and ultimately apply for citizenship, Boris Johnson has said.

The PM said Hong Kong's freedoms were being violated by a new security law and those affected would be offered a "route" out of the former UK colony.

About 350,000 UK passport holders, and 2.6 million others eligible, will be able to come to the UK for five years.

And after a further year, they will be able to apply for citizenship.

The US needs productive young workers and Hong Kong has a huge number of them. Trump is hurting our economic future by blocking immigrants.

It's not 2046 yet. So the UK is right to do this. China broke its word.

but I think for a lot of people who would want to immigrate, COVID-19 would be low on their list of things to worry about. It's all relative.

But not being brilliant but wanting a better life, America would probably not be on my shortlist right now. Maybe after 4 or 8 years of the Biden presidency, I would move here.

It's been clear to me since the British handed over HK that the 2-system governing will be going away. Was just a matter of time, and given the recent years' political problems they've made clear that time is now.

A law professor on Bloomberg said they will have more rights on the mainland than they will as HK’ers.

I think Bloomberg will stop broadcasting from HK. Probably will move to Tokyo and Singapore.
