Texas breaks record with nearly 7,000 new coronavirus cases

Source: MSN

Texas officials announced nearly 7,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, breaking the state's record for the total number of confirmed cases in one day.

The new daily record of 6,975 cases sits far higher than the state's previous record of around 6,000 cases.

The news comes as trend lines indicate that the rate of new infections in the state is sharply accelerating even as other hotspots such as New York have seen levels of new cases receding.

State officials have struggled to explain the sharp rise in cases, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) explaining in a recent interview that the state should have slowed efforts to reopen some businesses including bars.

In California, you have local governments refusing to enforce the Statewide mask orders. In Texas, you have the State banning local governments from imposing mandatory mask orders. Either way, you have the two biggest states seeing increases in COVID-19 cases because for some reason, exercising basic health precautions has become a political issue.

Abbott’s coronavirus order nixes Austin’s enforcement of face mask mandate

Gov. Greg Abbott’s new executive order related to Texas’ response to contain the spread of the coronavirus eliminates Austin’s and Travis County’s ability to enforce local requirements for people to wear masks.

During a briefing on his new order, which will allow many businesses across Texas reopen their doors on a limited basis, Abbott said his order supersedes any local orders that impose fines for people found violating face mask mandates.

Abbott’s order does recommend people wear face masks in public, but said no local government could issue a civil or criminal penalty to anyone not wearing a mask. Orders issued on April 13 by Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt and Mayor Steve Adler had provisions including $1,000 fines for violations of face mask requirements.

At the time, the two officials said they only would ask law enforcement to start issuing fines if they did not see widespread compliance.

1. No one will ever accuse the Texas governor of being smart.

That's for sure.

2. Every day is a new record.

It won't stop until we get some sanity shutdown and mandatory mask orders in place.

Abbott makes fools look like geniuses.

5. "...for some reason, exercising basic health precautions has become a political issue"

This is entirely at Trump's feet.

The soft-brained supporters of Trump look at his refusal to wear a mask in public and have decided that will be their signifier of political identity. They see his oblivious statements on the seriousness of the pandemic (It'll just disappear, etc...) and they adopt that attitude, versus the widely reported scientific recommendations, as their "statement" about the deep state and fake news.

Trump's grooming of his followers to only believe what comes out of his mouth is literally killing us.

6. Trump takes his war on masks to new lows

Trump and Pence want to push the idea that America is ready to reopen, which is why they keep on undercutting the message to wear masks.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/26/politics/donald-trump-covid-masks-politics-health/index.html

Talk show titan Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday warned that masks have become a "required symbol on the left to promote fear, to promote indecision, to promote the notion that we're nowhere near out of this."

For propagandists, masks have become the latest weapon deployed by elitists who previously pushed shutdowns and even the science of epidemiology itself as a way to undermine basic freedoms.

Pictures of Trump standing proudly barefaced among mask-wearing establishment scientists in Washington have become an emblem of the President's insurgent and disruptive bravado.

* * *

Trump apparently believes that wearing a mask in public will undercut his message that it's now safe to reopen the economy that is vital to his reelection. His retweet on Monday of a picture originally tweeted by Fox News veteran Brit Hume of Biden in a mask suggests that there may be a measure of personal vanity involved for the President.

9. And the stupid fuckheads don't realize that Drumpf is a pro-mask fanatic when it

comes to his own safety, and as long as it's behind-the-scenes. I wonder how many DUers are aware of this?

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/11/white-house-issues-memo-requiring-staff-to-wear-masks-in-west-wing.html
White House issues memo requiring staff to wear masks in West Wing, CNBC, 5/11/20
... The directive from the White House management office was laid out in a memo to staffers Monday afternoon, NBC reported. ... The memo also asked staff members to avoid visiting the West Wing, where the Oval Office is located, unless it is necessary, the sources told NBC.

Something to keep in mind when some fuckhead harasses you about wearing a mask -- if they're so ineffective or the Covid19 is just a hoax, or if only wimps or “Democrat Islamo-Maoists" wear them, then why does your fearless leader require everyone near him to wear a mask? Why is he wimpifying his staff -- and by extension himself?

10. Holy cow! on the TX Daily New Cases. And even deaths are up: 7 day averages: +75% in 16 days

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/texas/
Daily New Deaths: 7-day moving average (a checkbox below the graph)
June 14: 20, June 30: 35, +75% in 16 days

Many states showing strong rises in their daily new cases still show falling daily new deaths because the population that is getting infected lately is skewing much younger than before (infected young people die at much lower rates than infected old people). And because new deaths lag new cases by at least 2 weeks.

But Texas is showing strong increases in daily new deaths as well as in daily new cases.

=====================================================

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/california/
California's daily new deaths has been essentially flat in the last 2 weeks, currently 64 new deaths (7-day average)

12. and dan asshole patrick doesn't want any advise from any of those high falootin' doctors!!

‘No thank you, Dr. Fauci.’ Lt. Gov. Patrick says he won’t listen to nation’s top COVID-19 expert

https://www.kxan.com/news/coronavirus/no-thank-you-dr-fauci-lt-gov-patrick-says-he-wont-listen-to-nations-top-covid-19-expert/

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In an appearance on Fox News Tuesday, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told host Laura Ingraham, “I don’t need his advice anymore,” when they were discussing the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, Anthony Fauci.

“Fauci said today that he’s concerned about states like Texas that skipped over certain things,” Patrick said in a clip from the June 30 show. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. We haven’t skipped over anything. The only thing I’m skipping over is listening to him.”

Patrick claimed Fauci “has been wrong every time on every issue,” but did not elaborate.
