Florida confirms nearly 9,000 coronavirus cases in a single day, a new record

Source: Miami Herald

A record week of surging coronavirus numbers was only heightened on Friday, as state health officials confirmed 8,942 cases, nearly doubling the previous record of cases reported in a single day, two days earlier.

Floridaís Department of Health on Friday morning confirmed the cases, bringing the state total to 122,960. The state also announced at least 137 new deaths, bringing the total of COVID-19 deaths north of 3,400.

Over the last seven days, Florida has reported 29,163 new cases. Thatís nearly a quarter of all the confirmed cases in the state so far.

The alarming case total came on a day of record testing, but the percentage of tests coming back positive remains elevated beyond the 10% threshold recommended by public health experts. On Friday, 71,433 people were tested and about 14.74% of those tests came back positive

2. 15% positive out of 71k. That is a high infection rate. Suggests a huge number of undiagnosed cases.

15. Here in Philly we have been aiming for it

and had pretty much hit that and below until the past few days where I think they said it ticked up above 5% - currently attributed to teens 16 - 19.

18. They have a whole survey form process with the testing and do demographics graphs

https://www.phila.gov/programs/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19/testing-and-data/
(then click on the "demographics" tab)

That site also offers the data sets in various formats that people can comb through... like...

23. It Sure Is

Numbers I saw for AZ (here at DU) were about as bad.
Illinois saw an uptick from 2.1% to 2.8% in around 10 days.
Reminders about masks were kicked up.
And that was with the number still under 3.
DeSantis hasn't mandated masks yet at 5x that number. Dumb!

Seriously, what did they expect would happen?

8. Not just the beaches...

They just had to hit the bars! Hey, did you really expect people to do without their bar fix? What do you think we are already? Americans don't "do" sacrifice.

My son who lives in Florida posted something on his Facebook page that said, "All you had to do was wear a mask."

A mask only slows things down.

7. Yes!

Maybe states could compete with each other as to how many cases they can have. Treat it like a horse race. Makes me sad I live in a state with only 2 million people.

11. Even smaller states could have had a shot

at a few days of glory if they had put in a winning bid for the RNC convention. Try harder next time (if there is a next time)

29. Or, a smaller state could try to get the

most deaths per hundred thousand or whatever measure we'd like to use.

Come on people, where's your competitive spirit?

13. There is more to the story..

Over 3,000 of the cases were in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/Palm Beach. 3000!!!

Nearly 1,800 were in Tampa/St. Pete

Nearly 1,500 were in Naples/Ft. Myers

What do those places have in common? Three things - Beaches, elderly populations and high population densities.

Another 1,000 were in the Orlando area. 500 in Jax.

20. Beaches in and of themselves are not a problem.

Itís when people pack too closely together. I avoid the public beaches, however, for that reason. Unfortunately, people on the aggregate are too dumb to figure that out.
